Fox News warned Donald Trump he was facing this daring choice
It’s less than one month until Donald Trump takes over.
The realities of governing are setting in.
And Fox News warned Donald Trump he was facing this daring choice.
Mike Johnson’s position as Speaker of the House seemed secure.
Republicans won unified control of government and no one was in a mood to rock the boat.
But then Mike Johnson blew it big time.
Johnson thought he could ram through a 1,500-page spending bill loaded up with an extra $300 billion in wasteful pork.
Donald Trump and Elon Musk led a grassroots revolt to tank Johnson’s spending sell-out.
Johnson then endangered his future as Speaker by failing to deliver on Donald Trump’s request to take care of the debt ceiling before Trump’s inauguration.
Johnson didn’t line up either the votes or the spending cuts to make Trump’s request a reality.
Now House Republicans are questioning if Johnson is the man to lead the caucus for the next two years.
Johnson can only afford to lose three Republican votes in the January 3 Speaker election.
Kentucky Congressman Thomas Massie is already a hard no.
Johnson’s predicament grew thornier when House Freedom Caucus Chairman Andy Harris (R-MD) told reporters he was no longer sure he could support Johnson in the Speaker election.
“Before the last couple of weeks, I was in his corner, but now we should consider what’s the best path forward,” Harris stated. “We do need to consider whether — if we’re going to advance Mr. Trump’s agenda — whether the current leadership is what we need.”
In what was surely not a good sign for Johnson the debate over his Speakership reached Fox & Friends.
Host Todd Piro noted that Republicans needed to have a speaker in place by January 6 to certify Trump’s win and so the House could hit the ground running in enacting Donald Trump’s agenda.
Piro wondered if Johnson was up for the job.
“But your number one priority, in addition to certifying the election of Donald Trump, is making sure that you do not lose a minute while you have this power to put forward Donald Trump’s transformative agenda. All you’re guaranteed at the most at this point is two years. You need to take advantage of each minute of those two years because who knows what 2026 will bring?” Piro wondered.
Co-host Katie Pavlich agreed and said if Republicans wanted to replace Johnson, they should have a consensus candidate in mind right now so as not to waste any time.
“They should have someone lined up and ready to go to replace him immediately because these House speaker fights can last days, weeks, months… And so they’re going to have to decide, is it worth pushing off certifying the election, potentially pushing through the inauguration date to get a new speaker and whether President Trump, you know, there’s reporting that he’s upset with the way that the spending bill went down. However, it may be more complicated given that the certification day is in a week and a half,” Pavlich stated.
If this debate is making the airwaves at Fox News, that means rank and file conservatives are now engaged.
And that’s not a spot Mike Johnson wants to be in.
