Matt Gaetz gave Donald Trump the one answer he hated to hear
Donald Trump named Matt Gaetz as his pick to run the Department of Justice.
Gaetz faced massive blowback from “official” Washington.
And Matt Gaetz gave Donald Trump the one answer he hated to hear.
Matt Gaetz withdraws from consideration as Attorney General
Matt Gaetz’s nomination to serve as Attorney General lasted all of eight days.
Gaetz withdrew from consideration after the Swamp used false allegations to smear Gaetz as a sexual predator and a sex trafficker of minors.
The allegations were bogus – the weaponized Joe Biden-Kamala Harris Department of Justice never pressed charges – but the mere existence of an unproven allegation was enough to sink Gaetz.
Gaetz announced he was taking himself out of the running for Attorney General in a post on social media saying he had good meetings with Senators but felt enough were implacably opposed to him and that Donald Trump needed his Attorney General confirmed on day one.
“I had excellent meetings with Senators yesterday. I appreciate their thoughtful feedback – and the incredible support of so many. While the momentum was strong, it is clear that my confirmation was unfairly becoming a distraction to the critical work of the Trump/Vance Transition,” Gaetz wrote.
“There is no time to waste on a needlessly protracted Washington scuffle, thus I’ll be withdrawing my name from consideration to serve as Attorney General. Trump’s DOJ must be in place and ready on Day 1,” Gaetz added.
Gaetz said it was an honor even to be considered for the position and that he knew Trump would serve out a successful second term.
“I remain fully committed to see that Donald J. Trump is the most successful President in history. I will forever be honored that President Trump nominated me to lead the Department of Justice and I’m certain he will Save America,” Gaetz concluded.
Trump posted about Gaetz withdrawing his nomination and thanked Gaetz for considering the post.
The President-elect also hinted that big things were in the offing for Gaetz.
“I greatly appreciate the recent efforts of Matt Gaetz in seeking approval to be Attorney General. He was doing very well but, at the same time, did not want to be a distraction for the Administration, for which he has much respect. Matt has a wonderful future, and I look forward to watching all of the great things he will do!” Trump wrote.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis needs to fill the Senate seat vacated by Marco Rubio who will get confirmed to be Trump’s Secretary of State.
Gaetz helped run DeSantis’ 2018 Florida Gubernatorial campaign and also helped DeSantis prepare for the debates.
Gaetz could also theoretically return to the next Congress as he won re-election and his resignation is only from this Congress.
On January 3, 2025, Gaetz could still take his seat by virtue of his re-election win.
Or Gaetz could move into a lucrative career in podcasting and other MAGA adjacent media ventures.
There are many options on the table for Gaetz which is why his wife Ginger posted “The BEST is yet to come.”
