Caitlin Clark was taken by surprise when Donald Trump gave her this message
Women’s basketball star Caitlin Clark has taken the sports world by storm.
She was a topic of discussion for the next President.
And Caitlin Clark was taken by surprise when Donald Trump gave her this message.
Donald Trump was amazed by Caitlin Clark’s play this season
Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark became one of the surprising stories in sports this year.
The rookie brought more attention to the WNBA from her play than at any point in the league’s history.
WNBA basketball has been an afterthought until Clark arrived on the scene this year.
Fever games were moved to NBA arenas with her on the team and ratings for the league jumped.
Clark even earned the praise of the next President of the United States.
Former President Donald Trump talked about the WNBA star during an appearance on the Let’s Go! podcast hosted by former New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick and veteran sportscaster Jim Gray.
Gray pointed out that Clark’s games with the Fever had higher ratings than some NBA games.
He noted that Clark only makes $76,000 a season compared to NBA stars like Lebron James who make over $50 million and wondered if something should be done about the pay gap.
“Well, you’d like to do that, but it’s a very complicated thing,” Trump said. “You know, it’s a very unusual — she’s incredible, by the way. I watch, too. I think she’s incredible. The shot, you know, I watched the shot go in. It’s like couldn’t she shoot that way in the NBA? If you want another, just give her the ball.”
Trump compares Caitlin Clark to another sports icon
The former President noted that Clark brought new fans and excitement to the WNBA in a similar fashion to Tiger Woods when burst onto the scene playing on the PGA Tour in the 1990s.
“She is unbelievable. And it’s a — you know, it’s a phenomenon,” Trump stated. “It’s something that is taking place, and it’s unusual. You know, Tiger, when he first went out, remember those days when Tiger went out?”
Trump explained that the market would have to set the pay scale in the WNBA.
“You got to rely on the market. You know, you can’t go in and just say, ‘Well, we’re going to break this contract because this person did well.’ The league could probably go up and give her a bonus. You know, it wouldn’t kill the league if the league is doing OK. But they could — I mean, the league could really do something with it because it’s — you know, it seems unfair, but you have a lot of that,” Trump said.
He thought that they couldn’t change the WNBA’s salary cap over one player because it gets tricky to upend the market.
WNBA players are trying to get a new contract after a spike in ratings and attendance last season after Clark came into the league.
But the WNBA still loses $40 million a season which is subsidized by the NBA.
The historic interest that Caitlin Clark brought to women’s basketball hasn’t changed the reality facing the league.
