Robert Mueller just suffered the most humiliating defeat of his life
The media has been hoping against hope that Robert Mueller has an ace up his sleeve.
His investigation has produced no evidence of collusion, but pundits wishfully counter that with some variation of “but we don’t know what evidence Mueller has yet to reveal.”
Mueller was forced to show his hand in court and it ended up being the most humiliating defeat of his life.
Former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort is standing trial for crimes Mueller alleges he committed years before he went to work for Trump.
As part of the discovery process, Manafort’s legal team demanded Mueller produce any evidence of contacts between Paul Manafort and Russian government or intelligence officials.
His lawyers revealed in court that the special counsel’s office informed them they have no such evidence.
The Daily Caller reports:
“The special counsel’s office has told lawyers for Paul Manafort that it does not have evidence of any contacts between the former Trump campaign chairman and Russian government and intelligence officials.
That’s at least according to Manafort’s attorneys, who disclosed details of the interactions in court papers filed on Monday night.
The lawyers say they want a hearing to look into government officials’ leaks to the media regarding Manafort, a longtime political consultant who has been indicted on money laundering and bank fraud charges.
“By their actions, it is self-evident that the objective of these government sources was to create unfair prejudice against Mr. Manafort and thereby deprive him of his Fifth and Sixth Amendment rights,” wrote Manafort lawyers Kevin M. Downing and Thomas E. Zehnle.”
This filing throws a wet blanket on the media buzz surrounding the leak of questions Mueller wanted to ask Trump.
One of the questions was about if Trump had any knowledge of Trump campaign associates, including Paul Manafort reaching out to Russia during the election for any assistance.
Mueller was forced to tip his hand and it turns out he has nothing.
