Nancy Pelosi saw the results of one poll and realized she was headed for this massive defeat
Democrats are charging into the most high-stakes fight of their political lives.
How they proceed could determine the outcome of the 2020 election.
Then Nancy Pelosi saw the results of one poll and realized she was headed for this massive defeat.
Pelosi has been trying to ward Democrats off impeachment by stating that it would backfire on them in 2020.
But rank-and-file House members aren’t listening as the pro-impeachment ranks continue to grow.
Now, new polling data in five key swing districts reveals impeachment is a massive political loser.
WELL, PER NEW GOP POLLING, SHE’S GOT A POINT … The National Republican Congressional Committee polled five battleground districts, and found impeaching President DONALD TRUMP to be exceedingly unpopular.
THE DISTRICTS: California 21, where Rep. T.J. COX (D-Calif.) beat David Valadao; California 39, which Rep. GIL CISNEROS (D-Calif.) took in an open race; California 45, where Rep. KATIE PORTER (D-Calif.) toppled Mimi Walters; Georgia 6, where Rep. LUCY MCBATH(D-Ga.) beat Karen Handel; and New Jersey 7, where Rep. TOM MALINOWSKI (D-N.J.) knocked off Leonard Lance.
HERE ARE THE DEETS … The NRCC asked this question between June 30 and July 2: “Do you support or oppose impeaching President Trump?” In these five districts, impeachment support is somewhere between 29% and 35%, and opposition is in the high 50s and 60s.. The NRCC, which polled 400 people in each district, concludes: “Impeachment is not popular in suburban battleground districts carried by both President Trump and Hillary Clinton.”
If suburban voters abandon Democrats over impeachment in 2020, then not only will Donald Trump win re-election, but Republicans will win back the House.
Speaker Pelosi will try to use the polling data as evidence to strengthen her argument that Democrats should back off impeachment.
But it looks to be too little too late.
With Robert Mueller testifying on July 17 and court battles over Congress’ access to the President’s financial records figuring to soon be resolved, there may be no stopping the Democrats from lashing out and impeaching President Trump.
