Marco Rubio Just Laid the Leather on Zelensky For Lying About a Call With Trump’s Team

Marco Rubio just called Ukraine's president a liar on camera, without blinking.
Zelensky had just told the public that Washington tied security guarantees to Ukraine surrendering the Donbas.
What Rubio actually told Zelensky about security guarantees blows up that entire claim.
Rubio Lays Out What Zelensky Was Actually Told About Security Guarantees
Rubio didn't soften it.
He said flatly that Zelensky's version of events is false, and he said it with Zelensky's name attached.
"The US tells Zelensky that security guarantees depend on withdrawal from Donbas. That's a lie," Rubio said, repeating the claim before tearing it apart.
Rubio said he watched Zelensky make that statement, and called it unfortunate – because Zelensky knows it isn't true.
What Zelensky was actually told, according to Rubio, is far simpler.
Security guarantees do not kick in until the war itself ends.
The reason has nothing to do with politics.
A security guarantee means troops willing to step in and defend Ukraine if they provoke Russian attacks again, and putting that structure in place before the shooting stops means volunteering American-backed forces straight into the war Washington has been trying to end.
Any security guarantee is effectively Article 5 – the very thing Europeans, NATO, Obama, Biden, and the Deep State neocons started pushing more than a decade ago.
It’s that increasing Euro-military involvement on their doorstep that Russia objected to in the first place and was long ago promised wouldn’t happen only to see European elites and their American neocon stooges repeatedly gaslight everyone about.
The fact is it has never been America's interest to give Ukraine any sort of security guarantee.
Nor was it acceptable when the Soviets put security guarantees and arms in place in Cuba in the 1960’s.
Just like the Soviet regime running Russia back then was playing a deadly, nuclear-charged game, today, the Euro-NATO-NECON elites are playing an equally dangerous and world-threatening game.
When was the last conflict one the continent that European boots involved on the ground didn’t lead to US troops ultimately being forced to spill our troops blood?
Rubio drew a hard line between that guarantee timeline and the separate question of Ukraine's eastern territory.
Washington passed along what Russia is demanding on Donbas. It never endorsed the demand.
"It's their choice to make," Rubio said of Kyiv's leadership, describing the administration's role as finding overlap between two sides, not forcing one.
If Ukraine refuses a concession, Rubio said, the war simply continues.
Nothing in that explanation supports the claim Zelensky made in public.
Why the Donbas Framing Keeps Resurfacing From Kyiv
Zelensky has leaned on this exact framing before, casting American diplomacy as coercion instead of mediation.
Republican Rep. Anna Paulina Luna amplified Rubio's rebuttal within hours, telling her followers plainly that the secretary of state "has no reason to lie."
Her post treated the matter as settled: Zelensky misled the public, and Rubio corrected the record on camera.
That assessment lines up with how the Trump administration has described its own role in the talks for months.
Conservative foreign policy voices have been mapping out what real security guarantees would look like long before this fight broke into public view.
Heritage Foundation's Nile Gardiner has floated a European-led force – primarily French and British troops – backed by American air power, intelligence, and logistics, not American boots on Ukrainian soil.
It’s worth noting that for all intents and purposes, Zelensky already has the use of American intelligence, and logistics – and arguably air power to a degree if you consider their drones and missiles are already being paid for by US taxpayers.
Former Trump administration official Victoria Coates has pushed for a hardened eastern border arrangement among the NATO states bordering Russia, separate entirely from the Donbas question Zelensky raised.
Trump's lead negotiator has already said the same thing in public, on the record.
Steve Witkoff told CNN the United States could "effectively offer Article 5-like language" to Ukraine, calling the protections "game-changing" – and he tied that commitment to one moment and one moment only: after "the peace deal is codified."
Not before. Not conditioned on a map.
None of that framework ties a security guarantee to Ukraine handing over territory first.
It ties the guarantee to the war actually stopping – a distinction Rubio says Zelensky is blurring, whether by accident or by design.
None of this stays theoretical much longer.
Zelensky is set to meet Putin directly, with a trilateral sit-down alongside Trump to follow – meaning the exact terms Rubio just defended on camera are about to be tested at the negotiating table, not just refought on cable news.

The Lie Zelensky Almost Got Away With Before Rubio Spoke
The one detail that cuts hardest here is simple: a lie about security guarantees, left unanswered, could have convinced Ukrainians that Washington was secretly forcing a land giveaway behind closed doors.
Rubio shut that down in one take, on camera, instead of letting it simmer in European press for a news cycle.
That matters because Russia has been counting on exactly this kind of pressure to crack American resolve throughout the negotiation.
Every time Zelensky frames Washington as the one demanding concessions, he hands Moscow a talking point for free, and he hands skeptics in Congress a reason to question continued support.
Rubio's answer closes that gap without closing the door on Ukraine itself.
He kept the decision where it belongs, in Kyiv's hands, while refusing to let Kyiv's government rewrite what Washington actually said.
He was in the room. Zelensky's version wasn't.
