Costco Just Mapped Out 14 New Warehouses Across America While Rivals Keep Shrinking

Big-box retailers have shuttered thousands of stores over the past few years, from Bed Bath & Beyond to Party City.

Costco just did the opposite and announced fourteen new locations opening across the US and Canada this fall.

The list of new locations reveals exactly which towns just won the retail lottery while the rest of the industry keeps folding.

Fourteen Warehouses, Two Countries, One Fall Rollout

Every one of those fourteen sites means real construction jobs, real retail jobs, and real property tax revenue for towns that could use all three.

Each new warehouse typically hires hundreds of workers, from stockers to pharmacists to tire technicians, long before a single member ever swipes a card.

Costco is opening five warehouses in October, in towns like Lee's Summit, Missouri, and Camarillo, California.

Nine more follow in November, five in the US and four across Canada, from Idaho to Ontario.

The Newport News, Virginia store isn't just new – it's a full replacement of a warehouse that opened back in 1988, swapped for a 163,000-square-foot building with its own fuel station on 32 acres.

That's not a company playing defense while everyone else retreats.

That's a company betting people still want to shop in person, drive their own car to get gas, and load a cart until the axles groan.

Costco Is Building 30 New Stores a Year for the Next Decade

CEO Ron Vachris didn't stop at fourteen stores.

He told investors Costco plans to open 30 or more warehouses a year for the next five to ten years.

Roughly half of those will land here in the US.

The rest are spread across Mexico, Canada, Asia, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand.

Costco already runs 914 warehouses worldwide.

That's 629 in the US and 110 in Canada, expanding into the same real estate other big-box chains are abandoning.

Sam's Club and BJ's are opening stores too, chasing the same loyal membership model.

But neither one is opening at Costco's pace, and neither one is replacing 1980s-era stores with brand-new fuel stations on 32 acres.

The company opened 24 net-new locations in fiscal 2025 alone.

It's on pace for 35 total openings – including five relocations – by next August.

Sales tell the same story.

Costco pulled in $269.9 billion in net sales for fiscal 2025, up 8.1% from $249.6 billion the year before.

Fourth-quarter sales alone hit $84.4 billion, an 8% jump from the prior year.

And here's a number that should embarrass every retailer that's been begging shoppers for loyalty.

Costco raised membership fees in September 2024 for the first time in seven years.

Members didn't leave.

Renewal rates barely budged, staying near record highs even after the price hike.

Why Costco Keeps Winning While Everyone Else Struggles

People don't stick around and pay more for something they don't trust.

Costco built that trust the boring way.

Rotisserie chickens that still cost $4.99.

Bulk toilet paper that actually saves you money.

A return policy that treats customers like adults instead of suspects.

A hot dog and soda combo that's still $1.50, the same price it's been since 1985.

Other chains chase headlines about self-checkout gimmicks or shrinking store footprints.

Costco is pouring billions into bigger buildings instead.

More gas stations, more parking spots, more room for families who still like to drive somewhere and buy things with their eyes open.

This isn't complicated, and it isn't an accident.

Costco figured out that treating customers well and keeping prices honest beats every marketing department in the country.

The company is about to prove it in fourteen more parking lots this fall.
