Costco Regulars Found the One Weekly Window Where Retirees Beat Everyone to the Shelves

One Costco member got stuck in a Sunday line that snaked all the way to the back of the store.
Regulars call Sunday midday the worst three hours of the entire week.
But one member who has shopped Costco all over the country points to a window that puts retirees first in line for full shelves.
Sunday From 11 to 2 Is the Danger Zone
Simply Recipes pegged Sunday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. as possibly the worst stretch to shop at Costco.
That is right when church lets out, the kids are home, and half the neighborhood decides it needs a 48-pack of paper towels.
"I stopped by once on a Sunday afternoon, just to see how it was, and it was crazy. Never doing that again," one member wrote in a Costco thread on Reddit.
"I've learned the hard way not to shop on Sundays," wrote another, the one who watched that line stretch to the back wall.
The Takeout flagged one more trap – the eve of any holiday Costco closes for.
With Costco shut on Thanksgiving, that puts a big red circle around Wednesday, November 25.
The Tuesday Morning Window Belongs to Retirees
The best advice came from a member who has moved around a lot.
"In my experience, having lived all over the country, Tuesdays earlier in the day seem to be the best option," the shopper wrote.
That same member had a blunt warning about the rest of the calendar.
"In general, I would avoid Friday, Saturday, Sunday [and] Monday at any time," they wrote, adding that "Tuesday, Wednesday [and] Thursday are generally safe bets, especially earlier in the day."
There is a practical reason midweek works.
Southern Living pointed out that by Tuesday or Wednesday, whatever the weekend crowd cleaned out has likely been put back on the shelves.
Others swear by the bookends of the day.
"First hour or last hour seems to be the best times in general," another member wrote.
That same shopper added that "going after 6:30pm on a weeknight seems to be the best for my Costco" – a handy tip for anyone still punching a clock.
Every warehouse runs a little differently, so the smart move is to test your own store on a weekday morning and see for yourself.
Now think about who can actually walk through the door at 10 a.m. on a Tuesday.
Not the young dad pulling a shift at the plant, and not the mom running kids to school.
It is the folks who already put in their 40 years.
So while working families fight over the last rotisserie chicken on Sunday, retirees get first crack at freshly stocked shelves and empty aisles.
Costco Visits Jumped More Than 18 Percent Since 2019
If it feels like Costco is more packed than it used to be, you are not imagining it.
Business Insider, citing Placer.ai foot traffic data, reported that Costco warehouse visits climbed more than 18 percent between the first quarter of 2019 and 2026.
Walmart and Target barely budged over the same stretch.
Some of that growth came from new warehouses, but existing stores got busier too.
Costco's answer has been building new warehouses near busy ones and adding parking at high-volume stores.
That fix comes with a catch – more parking spaces outside means more carts fighting for the same aisles inside.
Costco Sells an Early Hour for $130 a Year
Costco did come up with one more fix, and it costs money.
Executive members, who pay $130 a year, now get to shop from 9 to 10 a.m. on weekdays and Sundays and from 9 to 9:30 a.m. on Saturdays, according to Fox Business.
Everybody else waits until 10, or 9:30 on Saturdays.
For a working family, that early hour might be worth the upgrade.
For a retiree, it is mostly a $130 answer to a problem Tuesday morning already solves for free.
Retirees Already Own the Best Hours at the Warehouse
This is one story where the people who built this country come out on top.
And Costco is not hurting for business either way, pulling in $297.3 billion in revenue in fiscal 2025, up 10.2 percent from the year before.
Those crowds are the price of a store everybody wants into.
That is not luck, it is earned freedom, and every retiree should use it.
Skip the weekend, stay away from the day before Thanksgiving, and walk in on a Tuesday or Wednesday morning when the shelves are full and the aisles are clear.
Leave Sunday afternoon to the rookies.
