Trump’s Top Economist Just Warned Mamdani How His Socialist Dream Ends in Empty Shelves and Hard Decisions for Shoppers

Zohran Mamdani promised New York City taxpayer funded government grocery stores with prices set by bureaucrats.

Kevin Hassett went on Fox News Sunday and torched the entire premise on live television.

What Trump's chief economist said next has socialists in New York suddenly very nervous.

Hassett Poses The Question Mamdani Doesn't Want Asked

National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett sat down with Shannon Bream on August 9, 2026.

He wasn't there to talk about Mamdani by name.

He didn't need to be.

Hassett laid out the numbers first – real wages up roughly $1,000 for typical middle class families under Trump, $4,000 for manufacturing and construction workers.

He pointed to 83,000 people currently building new factories across the country.

Then he turned to the real target.

"How do you think the economy is gonna work if it's run by socialists?" Hassett asked.

"How do you think it's gonna be if the government gets to run all the stores, and tell you what the price of everything is?"

He didn't mention Mamdani's name once.

He didn't have to – New York's new mayor is already building the exact system Hassett just described, with city funded grocery stores promising prices up to 30 percent below retail.

Hassett has watched this movie before.

He's the man who wrote an entire book warning America about "the drift" toward socialism years before Mamdani ever ran for office.

Venezuela Already Ran This Experiment And Watched It Fail

Hugo Chavez tried government run grocery stores in Venezuela.

Bureaucrats set the prices.

The shelves went empty within years, and Venezuelans lined up for hours to buy toilet paper and cooking oil.

Hassett referenced that exact pattern on air, warning that empty shelves show up "in every socialist country" the moment government decides what things cost.

Mamdani wants New York taxpayers to fund the same setup, just with a subway map instead of an oil field.

Hassett gave Bream a real acknowledgment too, not a dodge.

"The prices went up so much under Joe Biden, we totally understand why people are still frustrated when they go to the grocery store," he said.

That's the line Democrats won't say out loud.

Bream tried handing him the Democrat talking point anyway – the recycled polling line blaming Trump for grocery prices Biden set in motion years before he ever took office.

Hassett didn't flinch.

He pointed straight back to the wage numbers and the factory jobs, and let the audience decide who actually deserves the blame for a receipt that Biden inflated first.

That gap between the data and the grocery receipt is exactly the opening Mamdani is exploiting in New York right now.

Why This Fight Is Bigger Than One Mayor

Trump beat Biden's economy back from the ditch, and now a 33 year old socialist mayor is asking New Yorkers to hand him the same power that emptied Venezuela's shelves.

Chavez didn't collapse Venezuela's economy overnight either – it took price controls, currency printing, and years of bureaucrats insisting they knew better than shopkeepers.

Mamdani is starting with grocery stores because it's the easiest sell – everybody hates high prices, so why not let City Hall fix them?

The answer sits in every empty Caracas supermarket photo from the last decade, and Hassett knows it because he's studied socialist collapse for years, not just read about it in a briefing memo.

Give a mayor the power to set the price of milk, and the next fight is who gets to buy it when there isn't enough – that's not a policy footnote, that's the whole Venezuelan disaster in miniature.

New York just elected a mayor running the pilot program for the exact system Hassett spent Sunday morning warning the whole country about.
