Trump’s Handpicked Apache Pilot Just Buried a Self Funding Millionaire Tuesday Night

A wealthy Michigan businessman poured more than $31 million into one primary.

Michigan Republican voters just decided all that cash bought him nothing but defeat.

Now Trump's handpicked Apache pilot heads into a fall showdown that could decide who runs Michigan next.

Johnson's Money Machine Could Not Buy Michigan Republicans

John James just proved you cannot outspend a war hero.

The Apache helicopter pilot and West Point graduate crushed multimillionaire Perry Johnson in Michigan's Republican primary for governor, taking 49.7 percent of the vote to Johnson's 35.2 percent.

Johnson pounded the state with more than $31 million worth of ads, largely funded out of his own pocket while he declined political donations.

James spent a fraction of that, just $2.8 million.

Trump endorsed James in late June.

Former Michigan Attorney General Mike Cox and state Senate Republican leader Aric Nesbitt had also run for the nomination, but both suspended their campaigns before the primary.

Johnson refused to take the hint, spending months questioning whether James belonged in the race at all and clashing with him over it in a debate.

James brushed it off as the noise of a fading campaign.

Voters made their choice, and it was not close.

James told Fox News on the eve of the primary that "nobody outworks a ranger."

Turns out he was right.

The Roads Whitmer Never Fixed

James built his whole campaign around one broken promise.

Whitmer took office in 2019 pledging to repair Michigan's crumbling infrastructure.

During last month's televised debate, James put a number on her tenure instead: nearly eight years that left Michigan more dangerous, more expensive, and still driving on broken pavement.

Term limits finally force Whitmer out this year, and James wants Michigan voters to hand Republicans the cleanup job.

Benson Now Stands Between Trump's Pick and the Governor's Mansion

James does not get to celebrate for long.

Waiting for him in November is Jocelyn Benson, who has run Michigan's elections office for eight years and just beat Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson for the Democratic nomination.

Benson first won her office in 2018 and was re-elected in 2022, giving her a level of statewide familiarity most challengers never get.

James is a decorated combat veteran who flew Apache helicopters over Iraq and served multiple tours as an Army Ranger before building a career in his family's logistics business.

He lost two straight Senate races before finally winning a House seat representing the Detroit suburbs in 2022.

Now he gets the biggest fight of his political life, against an opponent Democrats believe is their strongest possible candidate.

Trump is not walking away either.

He rallied with James at the General Motors Proving Ground in Milford on July 27, and Michigan Republicans expect him back before November.

Michigan Just Solved Trump's Governor Race Problem

This win lands at a strange moment for Trump's endorsement machine.

His picks have gone 220-for-227 in 2026 primaries, a 97 percent win rate that outpaces almost every cycle since he first stepped into politics.

But governor's races have been his soft spot.

Randy Feenstra lost in Iowa despite a late Trump endorsement.

One of his gubernatorial picks lost a Georgia runoff to self funding billionaire Rick Jackson.

Pamela Evette lost in South Carolina.

Michigan was Trump's chance to prove a rich man's checkbook still cannot beat his brand with Republican voters.

Democrats spent this whole primary season insisting Trump's grip on the party was slipping.

Perry Johnson just spent more than $31 million finding out it is not.

November decides whether Michigan Republicans get to finish the job.
