Trump Returned to the Dinner Where He Was Nearly Killed and Roasted the Press
A gunman opened fire on Trump's White House Correspondents' Dinner three months ago.
Friday night, Trump returned to that same event and grabbed the microphone.
What he pulled out of his pocket sent the press corps into stunned silence.
Trump Turned an Assassination Attempt Into an Opening Line
Trump stood at the same annual dinner where a gunman had charged the security checkpoint with a shotgun three months earlier.
He didn't flinch.
"The show must go on," Trump told the room, echoing the words he used the night gunfire cut short his first correspondents' dinner as president.
Then he turned to the moment nobody in that ballroom wanted to relive.
Trump joked that when Secret Service told everyone to get down during the shooting, Nicki Minaj started twerking instead of taking cover.
The room laughed, groaned, and squirmed all at once.
Trump didn't care.
He praised Secret Service Officer Victor Gonzales, who took a bullet to the chest and lived because of his vest.
Gonzales got a standing ovation.
The press corps did not.
The Press That Mocked Him in 2011 Got the Bill
Fifteen years ago, this same room laughed while Barack Obama humiliated Trump from the podium.
Obama needled Trump about finally having time to worry about serious things, like whether the moon landing was staged.
Seth Meyers took the mic next and cracked that even he didn't think Trump's campaign was serious.
Trump sat there and took it.
Then he ran for president and won three times.
Friday night, Trump reminded the room exactly who was standing at that podium now.
He mocked CNN's Kaitlan Collins.
He needled Jake Tapper for burying Joe Biden's cognitive decline until after the 2024 debate.
He told the room he gets 93 percent negative coverage and doesn't buy their outrage act.
Even his own health secretary wasn't safe.
Trump joked that Robert F. Kennedy Jr. personally ran over the cow that became dinner's beef tenderloin and butchered it himself.
It drew one of the biggest laughs of the night.
Then He Reached Into His Pocket
Near the end of his remarks, Trump predicted the media would have nobody left to cover once he's gone.
Then he pulled out a red "Trump 2028" hat and put it on.
Trump announced his intention to run for a fourth term as president, working the room into laughter.
He reminded everyone he's already won three times and joked that running again should be easy at this point.
The room that laughed at his opening line an hour earlier now had to sit through the punchline.
It was also a middle finger to a press corps that's been predicting his political death for a decade.
Trump wrapped the bit by thanking the press and declaring it the "golden age of America" anyway.
Nicki Minaj fired back with a joke of her own, turning the bit into its own weekend news cycle.
None of it changed what actually happened – a president who was nearly killed at this same dinner three months ago walked back onto that stage and owned it.
The Punchline Fifteen Years in the Making
Democrats and the media hoped the shooting would humble Trump.
Instead he returned to that same event and dared the press to laugh at a joke about their own award show while he honored the officer who actually stopped a bullet.
The 2028 hat is a punchline, not a policy proposal – but it's also Trump reminding Washington that he's still the biggest story in the room, whether the press wants him to be or not.
Fifteen years after Obama used this dinner to turn Trump into a punchline, Trump used it to remind everyone who's still standing.
That's the joke actually landing.
