Tom Tiffany and his pilot soon faced a sinking aircraft.

Tiffany's Bonanza Lost Power Approaching Wausau Downtown Airport

Tom Tiffany was flying home from the La Crosse County Lincoln Day Dinner Saturday night.

His four-seat Bonanza aircraft lost power on approach to Wausau Downtown Airport.

The pilot made a split-second call.

He put the plane down on Lake Wausau instead of the runway.

The aircraft began taking on water almost immediately.

Tiffany and his pilot got out, hit the lake, and swam.

"As the plane began to submerge, we exited the aircraft and swam to a shallow area, where we waited until emergency responders reached us by boat," Tiffany said.

Rescuers pulled both men from the water and rushed them to Aspirus Wausau Hospital.

Both walked away with only minor injuries.

Tiffany's first move once he was safe was not a campaign statement.

It was a message about faith and family.

"God was watching over us tonight, and I am incredibly grateful to be here in the hospital with my wife, Chris, by my side," he said.

Alaska Senator Ted Stevens survived a 1978 plane crash that killed his wife, then kept serving in Washington for another three decades before dying in a second plane crash in 2010.

Stevens became a symbol of grit in Alaska politics precisely because he walked away from disaster and got back to work.

Tiffany's supporters are already drawing the same comparison.

Wisconsin's Governor Race Was Already a Dead Heat Before This

Tiffany is running as the Trump-endorsed Republican nominee for Wisconsin governor.

Trump's endorsement cleared his top rival out of the Republican primary, and he now faces Democrat David Crowley, the Milwaukee County executive, in the general election.

Crowley's own primary win came after Wisconsin Democrats flirted with nominating Francesca Hong, a democratic socialist state legislator from Madison.

Tiffany has spent the campaign warning voters that Wisconsin Democrats are choosing "common sense against crazy," a direct shot at Hong's brand of politics even after she lost.

Wisconsin's governor race remains too close to call heading into the fall stretch, with neither campaign able to claim a clear lead.

That means every news cycle between now and Election Day matters, and this is not the news cycle Tiffany's team would have picked.

But in a race this close, a candidate who swims out of a sinking plane and shows up grateful instead of shaken is a walking contrast with the career bureaucrat running against him.

It made him look like a man who keeps his head when everything around him is going under – then gets back to work the next morning.

That is the version of Tom Tiffany voters will remember walking into November.
