Rubio Just Revealed Ukraine Has Been Hitting Oil Terminals Tied to American Companies

Drone strikes keep setting fire to a Russian port that pays profits straight to Chevron and Exxon.

Marco Rubio just confirmed the war is now burning through American owned oil money too.

Now Rubio wants Moscow and Kyiv to agree to a truce that spares those very terminals.

The Port Ukraine Keeps Setting on Fire

Novorossiysk sits on Russia's Black Sea coast and moves more oil out of the country than almost any other port in the world.

It is also a hub for Caspian Pipeline Consortium exports, a project with major stakes held by Chevron and ExxonMobil, two of America's largest energy companies.

Ukrainian drones have hit that port again and again since the spring, targeting the oil terminal, the naval base, and the fuel depots that keep Russia's war machine funded.

The strikes are working exactly as Kyiv intends them to. They are also landing on infrastructure American shareholders have a direct stake in.

Rubio said the quiet part out loud on September 22. American-linked tankers and oil cargoes keep getting caught in Ukraine's strikes, and while he called it unintentional, he made clear Washington wants it fixed.

"This issue needs to be resolved. We cannot allow this to happen," Rubio said.

Trump's Peace Push Meets a Complication Nobody in Kyiv Wanted to Talk About

Rubio's proposal is simple on paper. Ukraine stops hitting Russian energy infrastructure. Russia stops hitting Ukraine's power grid. Both sides get a genuine ceasefire on the one category of target that keeps American companies exposed to a war they are not fighting.

President Trump plans to raise the energy truce directly with Volodymyr Zelensky in New York, building on a claim he made on September 14 that Kyiv and Moscow had already reached an understanding along these lines.

Zelensky has said Ukraine would honor a truce if Russia actually holds up its end, and even Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov called the concept a good idea.

That is a rare moment of three-way agreement in a war that has produced almost none.

This is not the first time Washington has tried this. Trump and Vladimir Putin agreed to a thirty-day pause on energy and infrastructure strikes back in March 2025, and strikes on Novorossiysk were still happening more than a year later.

Why This Time Might Actually Matter

The difference now is that American companies have skin in the game in a way that was easy for Washington bureaucrats to ignore a year ago.

Chevron and ExxonMobil did not sign up to have their Black Sea pipeline stakes caught in someone else's drone war. Every terminal fire at Novorossiysk is a headline that puts American shareholders and a Trump energy agenda built on production, not sanctions chaos, in the same sentence as a foreign conflict he inherited from Joe Biden.

Biden poured four years of money into Ukraine with no endgame and no plan to protect American economic interests caught in the blast radius. Trump is the one actually picking up the phone and trying to draw a line Chevron and Exxon can rely on.

A truce that holds does two things at once. It takes the war's most economically damaging target category off the table, and it gives Trump leverage to argue the broader peace framework he has pushed since taking office is finally producing something real instead of another thirty-day mirage.

Novorossiysk will keep burning until somebody makes the truce stick. Rubio just told the world exactly why Washington finally has a reason to make sure this one does.
