Trump Broke Ground On a Baltimore’s Biggest Project Since World War II to Answer China

Trump promised a Golden Fleet of American warships built to dominate the seas.

Now he broke ground on the Baltimore shipyard that will help build it.

A leaked Navy intelligence slide explains exactly why he had no choice.

Sparrows Point Builds Warships Again After Standing Empty for Decades

Trump stood at Tradepoint Atlantic in Baltimore County on October 6, 2026, and made a promise nobody in Washington has made in generations.

Trump described the project as "the largest new shipyard in the United States since World War II."

The site is Sparrows Point, the old Bethlehem Steel grounds that built Liberty ships around the clock during World War II and then sat gutted for decades after the steel industry collapsed.

Defense tech firm Anduril is sinking $3.7 billion into a 2 million square foot facility there, with billions more in federal backing behind it.

The project carries the internal name Arsenal-2, and it is built to pump out autonomous drone boats and submarine components for the Navy fleet Trump has pushed hard to rebuild since taking office.

This is not a one-off ribbon cutting.

It is the physical proof of a promise Trump made standing in front of sailors just months earlier.

The Pentagon Slide That Finally Forced Washington's Hand

A Navy intelligence briefing that leaked out of the Pentagon laid out a number that should embarrass every defense bureaucrat who let it get this bad.

Chinese shipyards now hold roughly 23 million tons of shipbuilding capacity.

American shipyards hold less than 100,000 tons.

That is a gap of more than 230 times, built up over decades while Washington outsourced its industrial base and labeled the retreat progress.

China already operates more than 370 warships to America's 294.

Trump signed an executive order in April 2025 declaring it "the policy of the United States to revitalize and rebuild domestic maritime industries," ordering a full Maritime Action Plan and a Maritime Security Trust Fund to start closing the gap.

By December, he was standing on a Navy deck unveiling the Golden Fleet, a planned class of Trump-class battleships he called "100 times more powerful than any battleship ever built."

Baltimore is where that promise turns into steel.

Palmer Luckey's Anduril already walked away from a similar autonomous-warship project in Seattle after a Navy program behind it got canceled, which makes the federal backing standing behind Sparrows Point all the more important this time.

Decades of Neglect Got America Into This Hole

Democrats treated American shipbuilding like a museum piece for three decades instead of a national security requirement.

No new battleship had been built since 1994, a 30-year freeze that handed China the kind of industrial advantage no amount of diplomacy fixes.

Shipyard workers watched their trade hollow out while the same Democrat-aligned trade policies kept shipping American steel jobs overseas.

Sparrows Point alone once employed roughly 30,000 workers in its mill and another 4,000 in its shipyard at peak before the site went quiet for a generation.

Trump is not pretending this gets fixed overnight.

He has said plainly that America makes the best equipment in the world but has not been building it fast enough.

Fixing that means pouring concrete in places like Sparrows Point, not another study or another task force.

A dead Baltimore County shipyard getting $3.7 billion in private investment and running federal backing is the kind of fix that shows up on a map, not just in a press release.

This Is What Rebuilding America First Actually Looks Like

The math here is almost insultingly simple.

A country that lets its shipyards rot loses the next war before it starts, and a country that rebuilds them wins the peace without firing a shot.

China built a 230-times advantage over decades because nobody in Washington was willing to say the word "shipyard" out loud in a budget meeting.

Trump just said it out loud in Baltimore County, in front of cameras, with a $3.7 billion check behind him.

Every drone boat and submarine part that rolls out of Sparrows Point is a direct answer to that leaked Pentagon slide, built by American workers on American steel ground that the last generation of leaders had given up for dead.

The jobs coming back to Baltimore County are the clearest proof yet that America First is not a slogan Trump tells supporters at rallies.

It is a shipyard, a payroll, and a supply chain that China can no longer count on having all to itself.
