Tesla Just Unleashed One Retro-Futuristic Surprise That Has LA Going Crazy

Elon Musk has always been known for thinking outside the box.
But his latest venture is turning heads across the entertainment capital of the world.
And Tesla just unleashed one retro-futuristic surprise that has LA going crazy.
Musk’s vision becomes reality in the heart of Hollywood
When Elon Musk first floated the idea of a Tesla diner back in 2018, many dismissed it as another one of his wild Twitter musings.¹
Fast forward seven years, and the Tesla Diner & Drive-In officially opened its doors Monday, July 21st, in Hollywood – and the response has been nothing short of spectacular.
The two-story venue at 7001 Santa Monica Boulevard represents something entirely new in the American dining landscape: a 24/7 "retro-futuristic" diner that doubles as a drive-in movie theater and EV charging station.²
Tesla enthusiasts began lining up early Monday morning, with some die-hard fans waiting hours before the gates finally opened at 4:20 p.m. – a classic Musk reference that his followers immediately recognized.³

This isn’t your grandfather’s drive-in theater
The Tesla Diner takes the classic American drive-in concept and supercharges it for the 21st century.
Two massive 66-foot LED "megascreens" tower over the parking lot, displaying everything from sci-fi movies to SpaceX rocket launches.⁴
Tesla drivers can sync the movie audio directly to their vehicle’s sound system through the Tesla Diner app, creating a personalized theater experience right from their car cabin.
The venue features 80 Supercharger stalls, ensuring that electric vehicle owners can power up while they chow down.⁵
And in true Tesla fashion, the company couldn’t resist showing off their latest technology: Optimus robots glided around the outdoor deck, serving popcorn to amazed guests.
"I saw videos of [Optimus] online and it was more of a linear movement, but it’s kind of jittery," one attendee noted, adding that they got the robot to try making heart shapes with its hands.⁶
Classic American fare meets cutting-edge innovation
Chef Eric Greenspan designed a menu that pays homage to traditional diner food while adding Tesla’s signature flair.
Customers can order everything from breakfast tacos and biscuits with red gravy to the signature "Tesla Burger" topped with "Electric Sauce."⁷
Prices range from $4 for a side of fries to $15 for biscuits and red gravy – keeping the diner accessible to a wide range of customers.
The food comes served in unique Cybertruck-styled burger boxes, and servers on roller skates glide around the dining area offering ice cream samples – a throwback to the golden age of American diners.
The venue offers more than 250 seats across two floors, with the ground level housing the kitchen, bar, and main dining area, while the rooftop features additional seating with views of the Hollywood sign.⁸
A destination that transcends the Tesla brand
While Tesla Diner parking is reserved for EV charging, visitors don’t need to own a Tesla to experience the venue.
The diner operates 24/7, making it a unique late-night destination in a city known for its limited after-hours dining options.
"It’s going to be open 24/7, so I think that’s pretty cool," said local resident Josh Becerra. "The only concern is just the traffic in the neighborhood, just getting in and out where I live at."⁹
The venue also features exclusive Tesla merchandise, including "Supercharged Gummies" and Tesla Bot Action Figures, turning the diner into a destination for Tesla fans and curious visitors alike.
But perhaps most impressively, the diner allows Tesla owners to order food directly from their vehicle’s touchscreen while charging – eliminating the need to leave their car during the entire dining and charging experience.
Global expansion already in the works
Musk wasted no time signaling his ambitions for the concept’s future.
"If our retro-futuristic diner turns out well, which I think it will, @Tesla will establish these in major cities around the world, as well as at Supercharger sites on long distance routes," Musk posted on X.¹⁰
He described the concept as "An island of good food, good vibes & entertainment, all while Supercharging!"
When one user requested a location in Starbase, Texas – home to Musk’s SpaceX operations – the CEO simply replied, "Ok."
The future of automotive retail
The Tesla Diner represents more than just a novelty restaurant – it’s a glimpse into how automakers might reimagine the customer experience in the electric vehicle era.
Traditional gas stations are inherently transactional: drivers stop, fill up, and leave within minutes.
But EV charging takes 30-45 minutes, creating an opportunity to transform what could be dead time into an engaging experience.
Vera Hammar, who drove 80 miles from Beaumont with her family to visit the diner, captured the appeal perfectly: "I like the retro diner. It’s kind of like a Ruby’s Diner. . . . Putting all this together is just very unique."¹¹
The Hammar family owns four Tesla vehicles, including a Cybertruck, demonstrating the brand loyalty that Musk has cultivated among his customer base.

Addressing the inevitable challenges
Not everyone is thrilled about the new addition to the Hollywood landscape.
A four-story movie screen now blocks the view from a nearby apartment complex, raising concerns about how the venue will affect the surrounding neighborhood.¹²
Local residents also expressed worries about increased traffic, though many remain optimistic about the venue’s potential positive impact.
The diner operates with some restrictions that reflect the realities of running a 24/7 entertainment venue – alcohol is not currently served, and only electronic payments are accepted.
Setting the stage for the future
The Tesla Diner opening comes at a crucial time for the company, which is set to release its second-quarter financial results this week.
With construction beginning in fall 2023, the diner represents a significant investment in creating experiential retail that goes far beyond traditional automotive showrooms.
Musk’s 2018 vision of "Grease meets the Jetsons with Supercharging" has become reality, complete with roller-skating servers and robot assistants.
The venue successfully captures both the nostalgia of classic American diners and the forward-looking spirit that has made Tesla a cultural phenomenon.
As electric vehicles continue their march toward mainstream adoption, the Tesla Diner model could become the blueprint for how automotive companies create lasting relationships with their customers.
In typical Musk fashion, he’s not just selling cars – he’s selling a lifestyle and a vision of the future that customers want to be part of.
The Tesla Diner proves that sometimes the most effective marketing isn’t advertising at all – it’s creating an experience so unique that people will drive 80 miles just to be part of it.
