Rand Paul Went Underground At Fort Knox and Came Back With a Number No One Expected

Elon Musk once demanded cameras inside Fort Knox and got stonewalled by the Treasury Department for a year.
Monday, Senator Rand Paul finally walked into the vault himself and started talking.
What the Kentucky senator says he counted with his own eyes is about to reopen a fight the government thought it had buried.
Rand Paul Enters Ft. Knox Vault to Inspect the Gold and Uncovers the Problem With America’s Treasure
Rand Paul climbed down into Fort Knox on August 10 and did what almost no outsider in American history has been allowed to do.
Historical records show civilians have laid eyes on that vault only twice since it was built in 1937.
Journalists and lawmakers got a tour in 1974, staged specifically to kill rumors that the gold had vanished.
Trump's first Treasury Secretary, Steven Mnuchin, took his own look in 2017 and posed for photos with the bars – he hasn't held that job in years.
Paul says he did the same thing this week, and he says the number – at Fort Knox at least – matches what Washington has always claimed: roughly 147 million ounces of gold, sitting exactly where the government says it sits in the Knox vault.
"We've come to see the gold," Paul told cameras before he went underground.

He came back out and said the gold is there.
Despite apparently misspeaking in the video – Paul said the US has 147 million ounces and half of it was at Fort Knox, but the 147 million ounces is how much gold is reportedly at Fort Knox and that is roughly half of the US’ gold reserves (the remainder is distributed among the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, the Denver Mint, and the West Point Mint).
At Fort Knox at least there’s apparently no missing bars,.
Paul has spent years pushing to audit the Federal Reserve, and Musk's DOGE team floated auditing Fort Knox itself back in 2025 after Musk and Donald Trump both publicly questioned whether the gold was really still there.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has said the department stands behind its numbers without personally walking the vault himself.

The Big Problem
Senator Paul confirmed the gold is there – but there’s a problem that’s costing Americans big time.
“I have been asking to see the gold at Fort Knox since February of 2025. This week I finally went deep underground and looked for myself,” Paul told his follower. “Yes, the gold is there, roughly 147 million ounces.”
The problem Paul continued is not the gold in the vault but the paper dollars in your pocket.
“The real lesson is not the gold itself. It is what happened to the dollar after 1971, when we severed it from gold. Over 85% of its value is gone. Gold does not expand when Congress spends. Paper money does.”
There was no word on whether Paul had confirmed what’s in the other vaults that hold the nation’s gold stores.
Why Gold Will Always Remain a Store of Value but Won’t Cover Government Long Today
What’s actually in Fort Knox – and the country’s other bullion deposits – has been a huge concern for Americans paying attention for nearly a century.
Today, the 8,133.5 tonnes officially claimed in US reserves would only fund federal government for a little over a month, according to us-debt-clock.com
If more Americans understood the full truth, there’d be no way we could fund the socialist government we already have, let alone the socialist nightmare elites in both parties are moving the country toward.
That’s why the government has made almost no effort to prove how much gold it really has for years.
Two public tours in 89 years is not transparency. It's damage control, deployed exactly twice, both times after the rumors got too loud to ignore.
The 1974 tour happened because congressmen and reporters were demanding answers after years of speculation that Lyndon Johnson or Richard Nixon had quietly sold off the reserve.
That 2017 visit came the same week Mnuchin was sworn in as Trump's first Treasury Secretary – a job now held by Scott Bessent – timed to reassure markets rattled by years of gold-conspiracy chatter feeding into the Trump administration's first days.
Every time, the government shows a handful of people the vault, says everything checks out, and locks the door again for another decade.
That pattern is exactly why Musk's push for a real, independent audit gained traction with conservatives who never fully bought the official line.
Paul's tour wasn't that audit. It was one senator, one afternoon, and his word – which to be clear is one of the solidests you’ll find in elected office.
Paul didn't back down on the real problem, and he used the moment to blast the bigger picture.
He told The Western Journal the dollar has lost 97 percent of its value since 1913, and that collapse – not a hollowed-out vault – is the real driver of America's affordability crisis.
The fact is you can’t get gold and other bullion without real work – literally it has to be mined.
That’s why its an actual store of value.
Paper dollars on the other hand cost almost nothing for the government to print out of thin air.
They can spend it on their own power, and enriching themselves and their cronies.
But it comes at the expense of everyone else’s purchasing power.
Why "Audit the Fed" Is Bigger Than Only the Gold
Here's what conservatives should actually be fired up about: the gold sitting in that vault has lost almost all its purchasing power because Washington spent a century printing money against it.
Rand Paul just proved the bars are real. He didn't prove the dollar backing them is worth anything close to what it used to be because it’s not.
That's the story the gold crowd and the sound-money purists understand.
The Federal Reserve has never been fully audited in its 113-year history.
Janet Yellen spent years as Fed Chair under Obama personally telling Congress she strongly opposed letting anyone open the books, then carried that same instinct into the Treasury Department when Biden made her his Treasury Secretary.
Every time Paul has tried to force a real audit since, Democrats and establishment Republicans alike have killed the bill in committee.
Paul knows that better than anyone in the Senate, and he's not pretending otherwise.
The American public should be able to see all sides of our societal ledger.
That includes full auditing of all the government’s reserve vaults, the Federal Reserve’s vaults and balance sheet, and the receipts for all the government spending across federal agencies and programs – including the Pentagon.
After all, while our fiat dollar hasn’t been officially backed by bullion for decades, that really only means the only backstop for the dollar is military hardware and – if taxpayers are getting taken to the cleaners there, as is clearly the case – then all that’s left is the return on the blood, sweat, and tears of our countrymen.
And if you’ve worked for a living in any way, you know it costs more and more of those these days to get less in return.
