Kamala Harris Gets Savaged Over New Zip Code That Looks Little Like She Once Championed
Kamala Harris built her political brand on closing the racial homeownership gap.
She just closed on a new eight million dollar coastal estate outside Los Angeles.
The census numbers on her new neighbors are raising questions nobody expected.
The Census Data Point Dume Would Rather You Not Talk About
Point Dume sits on a bluff above the Pacific, a world away from the neighborhoods Harris spent a career talking about.
Kamala Harris and her husband, entertainment attorney Doug Emhoff, closed on a $8.15 million home there this summer.
The property spans 4,000 square feet, with ocean views, multiple wine fridges, a private putting green, and parking for five vehicles.
Fox News confirmed the Census Bureau's own numbers for the exact tract Harris just moved into – 94% White, 0.2% Black.
That is not a rounding error.
Point Dume has long attracted a who's who of Hollywood and Silicon Valley money, from Bob Dylan to Julia Roberts.
Google co-founder Sergey Brin and venture capitalist Marc Andreessen own property in the same zip code Harris just moved into.
That is a neighborhood almost entirely without the very families Harris has spent years insisting the country owes something to.
A Career Built on Redlining Speeches, a Life Built Somewhere Else
Harris made the racial wealth gap a signature issue of her 2020 campaign, and she did not whisper about it.
She stood on stage at the Essence Festival and unveiled a $100 billion federal plan aimed at families in historically redlined communities.
Her stated goal, in her own words, was to "give black families a real shot at homeownership" after generations of discrimination locked them out.
As vice president, she kept pushing the same message, promoting Biden administration efforts to fight racial bias in home appraisals.
Harris has also spoken publicly, on more than one occasion, about the importance of Black Americans living among their own communities rather than being pushed out of them.
That comment has aged in a way her staff almost certainly did not plan for.
This is not the first time Harris's personal address has clashed with her public identity.
Critics made the same point during her 2020 campaign, when it surfaced that she grew up mostly in Berkeley, a comfortable college town far whiter than the Oakland she often referenced on the trail.
Her teenage years landed her in Montreal next, a city with roughly the same racial makeup as Point Dume.
Point Dume just adds one more zip code to that list.
None of that rhetoric followed her to Point Dume.
The listing for her new home promises "breathtaking ocean, island, and city views" and a private putting green behind a gated entrance.
The New York Post reports the couple traded one exclusive Los Angeles neighborhood for another, moving from Brentwood into one of Malibu's most guarded enclaves.
Access to the beach below the property runs through private gates that some residents reportedly control with facial recognition technology.
Few beaches anywhere in the state are harder for an outsider to reach than the one sitting below her new backyard.
That is not the picture Harris painted at the podium.
Every Zip Code Has a Price, and Harris Just Paid It
Democrats have run this play before.
Barack Obama spent decades campaigning on civil rights and economic justice, then left office and moved his family into a series of ultra-exclusive homes in some of the wealthiest, least diverse pockets of America, from Martha's Vineyard to Washington's Kalorama neighborhood.
Ted Kennedy spent the 1970s lecturing working class Boston about the moral necessity of busing, while his own children attended private schools that busing never touched.
The pattern is always the same.
The policy is for your neighborhood.
The lifestyle is for theirs.
Harris did not break new ground in Point Dume.
She just gave the pattern its newest zip code.
Her supporters will call this a private choice with no bearing on her public record.
Fair enough – but a $100 billion plan to integrate housing carries less weight from someone who bought her way out of the conversation entirely.
Obama's Martha's Vineyard estate came with the same defense, and voters remember how well that argument aged.
The next time Harris talks about racial equity in housing, voters now have a census tract to measure it against.
That tract has a number attached, and it is not one her campaign will be putting on a bumper sticker.
