Costco Shoppers Found the Cheapest Meal in the Deli Case and Trashed Another One

Costco has sold the same dollar-fifty hot dog and soda since 1985 and still will not raise it.
That loyalty trick just showed up in a completely different corner of the warehouse.
One deli tray now undercuts restaurants on price while another Costco staple is getting buried in complaints.
Kirkland Signature Mac and Cheese Beats Restaurant Prices by a Mile
A new breakdown from Tasting Table priced out Costco's Kirkland Signature prepared meals using real Denver-area shelf prices.
The analysis measured cost per serving using package weights and the nutrition label serving sizes printed right on the container.
Kirkland Signature Mac and Cheese came out on top at roughly one dollar and forty two cents per serving.
That number comes from a seventeen dollar tray that holds about twelve servings, according to the breakdown.
A plate that cheap beats what most families pay for a quick meal almost anywhere else in town.
Most Other Kirkland Signature Meals Cost Several Times as Much per Serving
The mac and cheese is not just cheap for a prepared meal, it is cheap even by Kirkland Signature's own standards.
Kirkland Signature Salmon Milano with Basil Pesto Butter runs about seven dollars and fifty cents per serving in Southern California pricing, more than five times what the mac and cheese costs.
Kirkland Signature Chicken Street Tacos land closer, at roughly a dollar fifty per taco, but that buys one small taco rather than a full serving of a hot side dish.
None of that makes the pricier trays a bad deal, since a protein-heavy salmon dinner and a pasta side are not really competing for the same spot on the table.
It does mean shoppers scanning the deli case for the single best dollar-for-dollar play in the entire lineup land on the same tray Tasting Table flagged.
Reddit Tears Apart One Costco Wrap While Defending the Mac and Cheese
Costco's deli wraps did not fare nearly as well in the same comparison.
Reddit users called the wraps super bland, with only the dressing and the grab-and-go convenience drawing any praise.
The mac and cheese earned a very different reaction.
Fans on the thread wanted it upgraded, not thrown out, tossing around ideas like crispy breadcrumbs on top, crumbled bacon or a heavier hand with the seasoning.
That is the difference between a product people tolerate and a product people defend.
One side dish at a dollar forty two a serving built enough goodwill that customers started improving it for free.
The wraps did not get that treatment, and Costco will hear about it long before anyone touches the recipe.
Why Warehouse Clubs Keep Winning While Grocery Prices Climb
Every trip to the grocery store has gotten more painful, and shoppers have adjusted by hunting for the lowest real cost per bite instead of the lowest sticker price.
Costco built its brand on exactly this kind of math decades before the rest of the industry caught up.
The company has sold the same dollar-fifty hot dog and soda since 1985 and refuses to raise it, eating the cost itself rather than break a promise to members.
The mac and cheese tray runs the same playbook: keep one item dirt cheap, and let it do the advertising for everything else in the store.
Food industry analysts expect overall grocery inflation to ease somewhat this year, but they still expect bills to keep climbing in absolute terms, not snap back to pre-inflation levels.
Plenty of grocery chains have spent the inflation years trimming package sizes and padding prices with quiet reformulations shoppers notice within weeks.
Costco went the opposite direction.
That is not charity.
It is a company that understands a dollar forty two serving of mac and cheese sells more sixty five dollar membership renewals than any ad campaign ever could, while the wraps are left to sink or swim on their own.
