Virginia Made Old Dominion a Gun Free Zone and an ROTC Cadet Had to Use a Knife to Save Lives

Virginia Democrats turned Old Dominion University into a gun-free zone.

Then a terrorist walked in with a gun.

What stood between a bloodbath and the students in that building was one ROTC cadet – and the knife he happened to have on him.

A Retired Officer Dead. Two Students Shot. One Cadet With a Knife.

The gunman walked into Constant Hall at Old Dominion University Thursday morning.

He asked if the room was an ROTC class.

When someone said yes, he opened fire.

The instructor – a retired Army officer – was shot and later pronounced dead at the hospital.

Two ROTC students were also hit.

Then something happened that was never supposed to happen in a gun-free zone.

An ROTC cadet charged the shooter.

Not with a firearm – Virginia Democrats made sure of that.

With a knife.

He closed the distance, stopped the attack, and prevented what every witness in that room knew was coming next.

FBI Special Agent in Charge Dominique Evans confirmed the students showed "extreme bravery and courage" and rendered the gunman "no longer alive."

FBI Director Kash Patel called it what it was.

"The shooter is now deceased thanks to a group of brave students who stepped in and subdued him," Patel posted. "Actions that undoubtedly saved lives."

One cadet with a knife did what an entire gun-control agenda said wasn't necessary.

The Gun-Free Zone Did Exactly What Gun-Free Zones Always Do

Old Dominion University prohibited firearms on campus.

The shooter didn't check the policy before he loaded up.

He walked into a building full of unarmed students and faculty, opened fire, and the only thing that stopped him was a young man willing to risk his life with a blade.

That is what gun-free zones produce every single time.

They don't disarm the attackers.

They disarm the defenders.

Virginia Tech was a gun-free zone in 2007 – 32 people died.

The University of Virginia was a gun-free zone in 2022 – three football players were murdered.

Old Dominion was a gun-free zone Thursday.

One person is dead and two are wounded.

The only reason the number isn't higher is that a cadet refused to accept the role Democrats assigned him – helpless victim, waiting for police to arrive.

Now ask the honest question.

What if one law-abiding student in that classroom had been legally carrying?

The instructor might still be alive.

The shooter might have been put down before he fired a shot.

A legally armed student is always closer to the threat than any police officer will ever be.

Richmond Spent All Session Making Sure Nobody Could Save Themselves

While that cadet was fighting for his life with a knife, Virginia Democrats were putting the finishing touches on the most aggressive gun-control session in state history.

Senate Bill 749 – an assault weapons ban – cleared the legislature on March 9.

Three days before the shooting.

Gov. Abigail Spanberger is expected to sign it.

That same session, Democrat Katrina Callsen of Albemarle pushed HB 626 specifically to restrict firearms on college campuses, narrowing every existing exemption for carrying a weapon inside a university building.

Virginia college campuses already prohibit virtually all law-abiding citizens from carrying a weapon on campus.

Senator Creigh Deeds wanted to go even further.

He said his priority was making sure there’s almost zero chance a madman with a gun will encounter a good guy with one on a Virginia college campus.

He blamed Republican former Governor Glenn Youngkin for vetoing it twice.

Youngkin is gone.

Spanberger is in.

Under the campus carry restrictions Democrats just passed, the cadet who saved those lives would have been the criminal.

The terrorist with the gun would have been the only armed person in the building.

That is not a hypothetical.

That is the world Creigh Deeds and Katrina Callsen are actively legislating into existence.

The Cadet Did His Job. Richmond Is Doing Everything It Can to Make Sure Nobody Can Again.

This young man is a hero.

Full stop.

He ran toward a gunman armed with nothing but a knife and his training, and he saved lives that would otherwise be counted in a body bag.

But heroism at knife-range shouldn't be the plan.

It was the last resort – because Democrats made every other option illegal.

Spanberger issued a statement Thursday saying she was monitoring the situation and that state police were providing support.

She said nothing about HB 626.

She said nothing about the assault weapons ban on her desk.

She said nothing about why her gun-free zone failed to stop the shooter – and what would have happened if that cadet hadn't been there.

The next time someone walks into a Virginia classroom looking for a fight, the only question that matters is whether anyone in that room can stop him before he pulls the trigger.

Virginia Democrats just made sure the answer stays no.
