Trump Shakes up the Pentagon and skips Over Army Undersecretary With New Pick for Command After Driscoll Exit

Trump just put the entire United States Army under a man barely thirteen months into his first Pentagon job.

He skipped the Army's undersecretary altogether, with American troops locked in an active clash against Iran.

No one in Washington is explaining why Trump passed over the Army's actual next in line for this job.

Adam Telle was sworn in as assistant secretary of the Army for civil works on August 5, 2025.

Thursday night, Trump jumped him straight to acting Army secretary, effective immediately.

Trump called him "a Great Patriot, who is respected by all."

Hegseth went further on X: "Strong and whip smart. He is indeed a great Patriot – and will be an immediate asset" to the Army.

Telle spent ten years in the late Senator Thad Cochran's office as deputy chief of staff and legislative director, working Hurricane Katrina recovery and flood insurance policy.

He later ran the Senate Appropriations subcommittee that controls the Department of Homeland Security's budget.

In Trump's first term, Telle served eighteen months in the White House as the president's chief liaison to the Senate, working the Abraham Accords and the authorization of the U.S. Space Force.

Before Thursday, he was chief of staff to Senator Bill Hagerty of Tennessee.

Trump did not hand this job to a general or a defense contractor.

He handed it to the guy who knows exactly which senators to call when the Army needs its budget passed.

And Telle's predecessor didn't leave quietly.

Secretary of the Army Dan Driscoll walked out of the Pentagon Monday without public explanation, capping months of friction with Hegseth.

Driscoll Leaves Behind an Army With No Confirmed Leader in Uniform or Suit

Driscoll's resignation didn't happen in a vacuum.

Hegseth had already pushed out Driscoll's ally, Army Chief of Staff General Randy George, earlier this year.

General Chris Donahue stepped down from U.S. Army Europe and Africa.

Hegseth fired General David Hodne from Training and Doctrine Command and Major General William Green from the chaplain corps that same stretch.

Navy Secretary John Phelan was forced out in the same purge.

Driscoll thanked Hegseth on his way out anyway, saying "we could not have made the progress we did without the support of Secretary Hegseth."

That's not how House Armed Services Committee Chairman Mike Rogers sees it.

"I'm tired of all the churn," Rogers told reporters. "I want to see some stability."

Rep. Ken Calvert, who chairs the House Defense Appropriations Subcommittee, said the department needs a good replacement in place as fast as possible.

Rep. Rob Wittman didn't soften it either: "You need a confirmed individual there in Army leadership positions, and right now you don't have that" – during an active conflict with Iran and while the Pentagon is trying to push a $1.5 trillion defense budget through Congress.

Telle Inherits a War Room Instead of a Ribbon Cutting

Nobody hands a first-year assistant secretary the entire Army unless the job in front of him is real.

Driscoll wasn't a paperwork secretary – he was Trump's negotiator in the Russia-Ukraine peace talks and the guy accelerating the Army's drone and counter-drone programs.

Telle now owns both of those fights on day one, with the Army mid-conflict against Iran and no confirmed chief of staff standing next to him.

Rogers and Calvert aren't wrong to want stability, and their complaint is fair – but Trump didn't pick a stranger to plug the gap.

He picked a guy who spent twenty years getting Republican defense priorities through the Senate and eighteen months inside the Trump White House making deals stick.

Washington bureaucrats take years to learn which senator controls which vote.

Telle already knows – and that's the bet Trump just made with a war still going.
