The Internet Lit Into Gavin Newsom and Jake Tapper’s Embarrassing Fishing Cosplay

Gavin Newsom once bragged he'd take on anyone standing between him and the White House.

Then Jake Tapper handed him a fly rod and asked about Kamala Harris.

What Newsom said next about her – and about Tapper himself – exposed a rule that only applies to two people in Washington.

Newsom Draws A Line Around Exactly Two People

CNN sent Jake Tapper to Montana's Bitterroot River to go fly fishing with Gavin Newsom – or at least play pretend for the cameras.

The segment was styled like A River Runs Through It, all soft light and rushing water.

Tapper asked the obvious question: would Newsom run for president in 2028 if Kamala Harris runs too.

Newsom didn't hesitate.

"I wouldn't do that to her," Newsom said.

In the same breath, he turned the courtesy on the man holding the microphone.

"I wouldn't do that to you," Newsom told Tapper directly.

Newsom called a Newsom-Harris primary "a gift from God for everybody else" and "mutually assured destruction."

He never explained why Harris – twice a failed national candidate – gets protection no other Democrat receives.

He never explained why a CNN anchor's feelings entered the calculation at all.

There's a name for what just happened on that riverbank.

It's called access journalism, and Newsom just told everyone the price of admission.

The Anchor Who Just Admitted He Protected Democrats For Years

Jake Tapper is not a neutral figure asking a neutral question.

He spent the Biden presidency assuring viewers the president was sharp, present, and fully in command.

In May 2025, Tapper published Original Sin, a book admitting his network missed a cover-up happening in front of it.

"Knowing then what I know now, I look back at my coverage during the Biden years – and I did cover some of these issues, but not enough," Tapper said on his CNN show.

He went further with NPR: "Knowing what I know now, I barely scratched the surface."

Tapper even admitted Lara Trump was right and he was wrong when she warned about Biden's decline back in 2020.

That's the same anchor Newsom just spared from the primary he called mutually assured destruction.

A man who confessed to protecting one Democrat for four years is now fishing buddies with the next one he's supposed to be covering critically.

A Pattern That Started Long Before The Fishing Trip

This isn't the first time a friendly Democrat interview came wrapped in scenery instead of scrutiny.

Conservative outlets have tracked how major networks routinely hand Democratic politicians soft, cinematic setups – walks on the beach, kitchen-table chats, and now riverbanks – while Republicans get combative panel formats.

A report from [your]NEWS this year found legacy media aggregators consistently boosted outlets that lined up behind Democratic presidential candidates, treating favorable coverage as the industry default rather than the exception.

Tapper's own book proved the mechanism in writing: reporters who like a politician's team choose comfort over confrontation, and they keep the arrangement going as long as access keeps flowing.

Newsom fishing with Tapper isn't a break from that pattern.

It's the pattern working exactly as designed, with a Montana river standing in for a green room.

Harris gets spared because Newsom needs Democratic activists who still love her.

Tapper gets spared because Newsom needs a friendly camera for the next three years of positioning.

Every other Democrat in that primary field is fair game, because they don't hold either kind of leverage over him.

That's not principle.

That's a list of who can hurt Gavin Newsom and who can't.
