Texas Dads Found Out the Reason Their Kids’ Crossing Guard Had Been Riding the Bus for Months and Went to Work

Trecia Crawford never missed a morning at her crosswalk.

She was just always there — stop sign up, smile on, every kid accounted for.

Nobody on the dads club knew what it was taking to get her there.

The Moment Richardson Dads Decided to Do Something About It

Crawford's car had died in the fall and she couldn't afford to fix it.

She started Lyfting to her post every morning – until she ran out of Lyft money and switched to the bus.

She never said a word about it to anyone.

The Moss Haven Elementary Dads Club in Richardson, Texas, is exactly what it sounds like.

Six to eight fathers, every morning, volunteering their time before work to help kids safely get through the school drop-off.

Luke Wagner, the club's president, explained their purpose plainly: "We're a group of dads who signed up to come together to better the students and the teachers' environment here at Moss Haven Elementary."

They work alongside Ms. Crawford every morning.

She knows their kids' names.

She knows their names.

"She's out here every morning, every afternoon," said club member Marcus Walther. "She probably knows more parents on a first-name basis than most people."

So when they found out how she'd been getting to work – months of it – they didn't write a petition.

They didn't wait for the school district to act.

They didn't post about it online asking someone else to do something.

They fixed it.

How Seven Dads Pulled Off a Surprise That Left a Crossing Guard in Tears

The dads launched a quiet campaign to buy Ms. Crawford a car.

They raised $6,800 in less than a week.

Club member Adam Tharp manages a local auto repair shop and used those connections to source a white Jeep Cherokee at a steep discount – then threw in several free oil changes.

Every dollar was handled.

The leftover money covered her insurance and the title transfer.

On a morning in early March, the dads gathered while Ms. Crawford was on duty – stop sign in hand, kids crossing – and surprised her with the keys.

She stood there covering her face, tears going, surrounded by the men who made it happen.

"Community isn't just a buzzword," the Richardson Independent School District wrote in a blog post. "It's the action, time, and commitment of the parents, teachers, staff, and all those who show up in the smallest and biggest ways."

The Morning Everything Changed

A few weeks later, Ms. Crawford pulled into Moss Haven Elementary for the first time in months behind her own wheel.

White Jeep Cherokee, insured, oil changes covered, title in her name.

The same kids were waiting at the crosswalk.

The same dads were already there.

The only thing different was the smile – and if you know Ms. Crawford, you already know that's saying something.
