This was not a scheduled mea culpa and Smith did not plan it before this week.

Anthony Fauci sat before the Senate Homeland Security Committee and invoked the Fifth Amendment 111 times rather than answer for gain of function funding, the lab leak cover story, or the school closures he defended for years.

Senator Rand Paul chairs that committee and announced a contempt vote is coming next week over Fauci's stonewalling.

Smith watched every minute of it from his vacation, and he told his audience Kyrie Irving was the person he thought about most.

For a commentator who has never once walked back a take, watching Fauci dodge a subpoena was apparently the tipping point.

The Apology Reopens A Debate Democrats Hoped America Forgot

This is not just Stephen A Smith being reflective on a random Thursday.

This is the country's most powerful sports voice admitting on camera that the pressure campaign against unvaccinated athletes was built on a lie.

Novak Djokovic was banned from the US Open and deported from Australia for the same decision Irving made.

He came back in 2023 and won the US Open outright, in front of a Moderna advertisement, silencing the "anti science" label the press hung on him for two years.

Aaron Rodgers took heat for months over his own vaccine status and never backed down once the mandates started collapsing under their own weight.

Every one of these men was mocked by the same sports and media class that is now watching the architect of their punishment refuse to answer for it.

Smith's apology matters because he is not some fringe podcaster.

He is the face of ESPN and he just told tens of millions of Americans that Kyrie Irving was right and the people who destroyed him for two years, including himself, were wrong.

The Pardon Loophole Fauci Is Betting Everything On

Fauci told the American public back in 2022, on camera, that he would welcome oversight and had nothing to hide.

His presidential pardon was supposed to make that promise easy to keep.

Paul reminded him on the record that the pardon strips away the very protection he leaned on all afternoon, and Fauci stonewalled anyway.

That is not the behavior of a man with nothing to hide, and Stephen A Smith saw it plainly enough to rewrite five years of his own public record on live television.

This isn't a man with no skin in the game – COVID put Smith in a hospital bed over New Year's 2021 with both lungs full of pneumonia, and even that scare didn't stop the hearing from making him more suspicious of the pandemic response, not less.

If the man who ran the entire COVID response cannot answer a single question about it under oath, the athletes who refused to comply on instinct deserve more than a television apology.

They deserve every job, every dollar, and every headline the mob took from them back.

Kyrie Irving got his apology this week.

The rest of the country punished right alongside him is still waiting on theirs.
