Obama Tried Slamming Trump With Old Men Clinging to Power Quip but His Own Party Took the Hit

Barack Obama raised money, cut ads, and rallied Democrats to reelect Joe Biden in 2024.

Now Obama insists the world's biggest problem is old men who refuse to let go of power.

The internet had one blunt question for him about whose side he took.

Obama Told Salem State That Women Would Run the World Better

Obama took the stage at Salem State University and mused that if you put women in charge of every government for two years, "things wouldn't be perfect, but they'd be better."

Clipped alongside that remark was an older Obama line that resurfaced in the same cycle – at a 2019 event in Singapore, he said, "If you look at the world and look at the problems, it's usually old people, usually old men, not getting out of the way."

Conservative outlets stitched the two clips together into one story: old men, clinging to power, holding the world back.

The remarks were filmed, clipped, and pushed out across social media within hours.

By nightfall the phrase "old men clinging to power" was trending on its own.

The 2019 Version of This Complaint Aged Just as Badly

Obama has now made some version of this argument for seven years, across two different presidencies, and the joke has only gotten sharper each time he's told it.

Conservative writer Dinesh D'Souza asked the obvious question: "If he truly believed this to be the case, why did he run against Hillary in 2008? Everything with this guy is a con game."

Erick Erickson was blunter about the "women in charge" half of the argument, writing that Obama "must not know any women," since a world run entirely by women would still have wars, disagreements, and outbursts.

One commenter needled the premise from the other direction, noting Los Angeles and Seattle already let progressive governance run largely unchallenged for years and asking Obama to explain the results.

The Internet Did Not Forget His 2024 Campaign for Biden

Conservatives online did not need long to find the hole in the argument.

Obama poured money, airtime, and star power into keeping an eighty-one-year-old Joe Biden in the Oval Office throughout 2024, headlining a Hollywood fundraiser that pulled in millions for the campaign.

At one campaign stop, Obama was photographed physically helping Biden off the stage, the kind of image that ages worse every time Obama opens his mouth about men who won't let go.

One widely shared post juxtaposed his two positions – Obama in 2026 warning about old men clinging to power, next to Obama in 2024 fundraising for one, roughly paraphrased across dozens of reposts.

Twitchy put it plainer, calling Obama "a nasty, bitter, old man who can't let go of the spotlight" himself.

Democrats Have Been Making This Argument Selectively for Years

Commenters did not stop at Biden.

One reply pointed out that Nancy Pelosi and Maxine Waters have clung to power for decades, long after most Americans think they should have stepped aside.

Chuck Schumer, in his mid-seventies, still runs Senate Democrats.

Every name critics reached for came from Democratic leadership, not the other side of the aisle.

That is the detail Obama's speech conveniently skipped.

Democratic leaders insisted for two straight years that Biden was sharp, capable, and fit for another term, right up until the debate stage in Atlanta proved otherwise on live television.

Obama was one of the people selling that story to the country, not a bystander watching it happen.

A party that defended an eighty-one-year-old president's mental fitness until the cameras made denial impossible does not get to send its most famous member out weeks later to lecture the world about men who won't step aside.

Democrats Just Handed Republicans the Perfect Clip for Next November

Obama built his entire political brand on being the candidate of change, hope, and generational turnover.

That brand does not survive a clip of him campaigning for Biden while simultaneously lecturing the world about men who won't let go.

Republicans do not need to write the next attack ad.

Obama already handed them the footage, the soundbite, and the receipts, all in one speech.
