NBC Brought Their Feel-Good Contributor Back From an Iowa Classroom After Admitting What Viewers Want

Peter Alexander walked out of NBC News after 22 years and landed at the former MSNBC.
Now NBC has reached into an Iowa college classroom to bring a familiar face back on the air.
NBC's explanation for the move reads like a confession the network never expected to make.
Harry Smith Heads From a Pella Lecture Hall Back to Today and Nightly News
Harry Smith is back at NBC News.
The network brought him on as a regular contributor, with the news breaking on September 28, 2026.
His beat is a "Common Good" feature series slated for Today, Nightly News and NBC's live events.
Smith left NBC in March 2024 after 12 years and went home to Pella, Iowa, to teach at Central College – the school that gave him his diploma.
Long before NBC, he woke up America on CBS as co-anchor of CBS This Morning and later as host of The Early Show.
His first assignment came at an NBC News event called "Common Ground," hosted by Savannah Guthrie and Mike Tirico.
"I am thrilled to have the opportunity to do what I have done for so long: tell America's story," Smith said.
He added, "I have long believed that there is more that unites us than divides us."
There's no word yet on how often his stories will air.
NBC's Viewers Begged the Network to Report Both Sides
That "Common Ground" banner didn't come out of nowhere.
NBC rolled out the franchise on December 4, 2025, after consumer research showed executives what their audience was fed up with.
The answer was brutal.
One of the complaints that came back was a plea to "Report things from both sides."
Think about that.
People had to ask a major American news network to cover both sides of a story.
NBC boiled its response down to a three-word marketing promise – "Facts. Clarity. Calm."
"The audience tells us what they want is less partisanship, less of a focus on extremes and more of a focus on civil, solutions-oriented dialogue," NBC News president Rebecca Blumenstein admitted.
Savannah Guthrie went further: "I think that legacy media needs to remind folks who we are and what we do."
Bret Baier, for the record, has run a "Common Ground" series on Special Report since 2022.
Gallup's September 2025 survey found just 28 percent of Americans trust the media to report the news "fully, accurately and fairly."
Gallup had never recorded a number below 30 percent since it began asking in the 1970s, back when confidence ran as high as 72 percent.
Among Republicans, trust sank to 8 percent – single digits for the first time ever.
Ratings Are Up at NBC and Trust Is Still in the Basement
NBC will point to its ratings.
Nightly News averaged 6.54 million viewers for the 2025-2026 season, up 9 percent, and NBC is calling it the newscast's best competitive season in seven years.
It still trailed ABC's World News Tonight by nearly two million viewers, and ABC has held the top spot for a full decade.
A bigger audience doesn't mean a believing one.
The newsroom has taken hits too.
Alexander was NBC's chief White House correspondent and a Today co-host when he announced his move to MS NOW in March 2026, months after the old MSNBC was split off from NBC.
A former NBC News producer told Fox News the network "is now a tomb with feckless leadership and nothing but budget cuts, pay cuts, and boring, cheaply produced shows."
Over at CBS, new editor-in-chief Bari Weiss told her staff in January 2026, "We are not producing a product that enough people want."
Two networks, one diagnosis, and both finally saying out loud what conservatives have been shouting for decades.

Why a Feel-Good Feature Won't Win Back the Heartland
Harry Smith is a gifted storyteller, and plenty of Americans who drank their morning coffee with him on CBS will be glad to see his face again.
But conservatives didn't stop trusting NBC because it ran short on heartwarming features.
They stopped trusting it because of the political coverage – and 8 percent is a verdict, not a marketing problem.
NBCUniversal News Group chairman Cesar Conde and Rebecca Blumenstein can hand Smith the "Common Good" beat and stage all the unity events they want.
The real test comes the next time a Trump story breaks, and NBC has to choose between the both-sides coverage its viewers begged for and the same old script that drove conservatives to the exits.
