Masked Robber Picked the Wrong Customer at an Orland Park Pump

Illinois lawmakers passed one of the strictest gun laws in the country.

None of it stopped a masked man from pulling a gun on a stranger at a gas pump.

The customer he picked happened to be carrying a gun of his own.

Illinois Concealed Carrier Shot a Masked Robber Before He Could Pull the Trigger

The confrontation happened Tuesday morning at a Shell station at Harlem Avenue and 151st Street in Orland Park.

Surveillance video shows a masked man walking up behind a customer who was simply pumping gas.

He displayed what looked like a handgun and demanded the customer hand something over.

The customer was carrying a valid Illinois Concealed Carry License.

Instead of complying, he drew his weapon and fired at least twice.

The suspect dropped his gun and ran, visibly limping from the gunfire on camera.

Orland Park police found him nearby and got him medical treatment.

Naseem Elmosa, whose family owns the station, watched it happen from behind the counter.

"He was masked. It was clear on plain view sight that this person, he was armed, of course," Elmosa said.

He added the attempted robber's choice of target was "really convenient" for the customer, but not for the man who picked a fight with an armed Illinoisan.

Police have not released either man's name, and no charges have been announced.

The customer was not hurt and is cooperating with investigators.

Nearly Half a Million Illinois Gun Owners and This Was Not the First Time

Illinois has issued roughly 450,000 concealed carry licenses statewide, each one requiring a background check, a FOID card, and state-mandated training before a resident can legally carry.

Former FBI tactical training director Rob Chadwick has pointed to a running list of Chicago-area cases where licensed carriers stopped crimes in progress.

Blaze News counted at least ten of them across the last year alone.

Armed robberies at ATMs, jewelry stores, and restaurants. Carjackings. Drive-by shootings interrupted before anyone else got hit.

One of those confrontations ended with a would-be robber dead outside an ATM.

Another ended with 44 year old gunman Edwin Lopez killed mid-shooting on a public street.

These are not isolated headlines. They are a pattern spanning Englewood, Humboldt Park, Garfield Park, and Edgewater, all inside a city Democrats have run for generations.

A tow truck driver interviewed about the danger summed up daily life for Chicago-area workers: "In Chicago, you go to work not knowing if you will come back home."

]Why Governor Pritzker's Gun Laws Keep Losing to a Trigger Finger

Governor JB Pritzker has spent years signing new restrictions on Illinois gun owners, from magazine capacity limits to bans on so called switches and expanded red flag laws that let judges strip firearm access from people they deem dangerous.

Defending his gun ban in court after a county judge temporarily blocked part of it, Pritzker told reporters he was "very confident" the courts would side with him.

He has also said sheriffs who refuse to enforce his laws do not get to pick and choose, because "you don't get to choose what laws you enforce when you are in law enforcement."

The man who walked up on an armed stranger at a gas pump did not check the statute book first.

He checked whether his target looked like easy prey, and he guessed wrong.

Criminals do not obey the laws Pritzker passes. Law-abiding citizens are the ones who show up for the background check, the training class, and the license fee, and then get to decide whether they walk away from a robbery attempt.

Pritzker is not the one standing at the pump when a masked man decides today is the day.

Orland Park's customer is going home tonight. The man who tried to rob him is explaining himself to a hospital bed and, soon enough, a prosecutor.
