CNN’s Data Chief Just Undercut the Blue Wave Story the Network Keeps Selling

Harry Enten just told CNN's audience Trump has the worst approval of any second-term president this century.

Then one number from his September 28 broadcast quietly undercut everything CNN about Democrats now holding an 11-point lead on the generic ballot heading into November's midterms.

Now CNN has to question everything they have told you about a looming Blue Wave.

The Number CNN Moved Past Fast

Enten put up two figures side by side.

71% of Democrats say they're certain to vote this November.

71% of MAGA Republicans said the exact same thing.

Not a lopsided enthusiasm gap. Not the demoralized, demobilized GOP base CNN has been describing for a year. A dead heat, among the voters who actually decide Republican primaries and show up in November.

CNN's data chief just told viewers that the party supposedly on the ropes is matching Democratic turnout energy point for point, at least where it matters most.

Trump's Base Isn't Going Anywhere, Whatever the Toplines Say

The turnout numbers weren't the only thing worth sitting with.

Enten also reported that Trump pulled 99% of the MAGA Republican vote in 2024.

His approval rating inside that same group now sits at 98%, a one-point drop Enten himself called "perhaps surprisingly" small.

That matters, because Enten's other reporting this cycle is genuinely rough for Republicans.

He's put Trump's net approval among independents at the worst mark of any second-term president this century, worse than George W. Bush during the Iraq War, worse than Barack Obama at the same point in his second term.

He's cited Washington Post and CNBC polling showing Trump underwater by 19 to 24 points overall.

An Emerson College poll released in September has Democrats up 53% to 42% on the generic ballot, an 11-point spread that would be a landslide if it held.

Republicans Are Quietly Running Ahead of Trump, Not Underneath Him

Here's the part CNN's coverage keeps skipping past: non-MAGA Republicans aren't nearly as fired up as the base, with only 46% calling themselves extremely motivated to vote, well behind the 71% Enten found among Democrats on that same measure.

Republican candidates seem to know it, because they're running their own campaigns instead of Trump's.

In the first half of September, fewer than 1% of GOP midterm ads mentioned Trump at all, while roughly one in five Democratic ads did.

That's a party betting its candidates can outrun the president's numbers rather than ride them.

By Enten's aggregate, it might be working: Republicans are polling at 41% on the generic House ballot even as Trump's overall approval sits closer to 37%, meaning GOP candidates are running ahead of Trump himself.

Democrats, Enten has said, are actually underperforming relative to how unpopular Trump is, not overperforming.

Why Turnout Parity Still Matters More Than the Toplines

Midterms are decided by who actually shows up, not by who's angrier on a phone survey three months out.

Democrats have historically held the turnout edge in a midterm against a Republican White House. That's the pattern that built 2018, when a real enthusiasm gap turned a rough environment into a wave.

A generic-ballot lead built on that same kind of gap is a genuine warning sign for the party out of power.

A generic-ballot lead sitting on top of a MAGA base matching Democratic turnout certainty, while GOP candidates run measurably ahead of Trump's numbers, is a much shakier foundation for a wave than CNN's coverage lets on.

None of this guarantees Republicans hold the House. An 11-point deficit on the ballot is a real problem, non-MAGA Republican enthusiasm is soft, and bad approval numbers are a real problem too.

But the "Republicans are demoralized and staying home" version of the story, the one built into a lot of the coverage around these toplines, doesn't survive Enten's turnout numbers.

He put those numbers on air anyway, even though they complicate the story CNN has been telling.

That's more than most of his colleagues have managed this year.
