Baltimore firefighters contained one ship fire that brought back scary memories of Biden era disaster

Baltimore’s Patapsco River was the scene of another maritime emergency.
But this time, first responders were ready and acted fast.
And Baltimore firefighters contained one ship fire that brought back scary memories of the Key Bridge disaster.
Fire erupts on cargo ship near Key Bridge site
A bulk carrier caught fire in Baltimore’s Patapsco River near the Francis Scott Key Bridge location.¹
The vessel, identified as the Liberian-flagged W SAPPHIRE, had left Baltimore on Monday, August 18 at 5:55 p.m. en route to Port Louis, Mauritius.²
Maritime records show the ship’s call sign as D5AF7, with IMO number 9605645 and MMSI number 636023364.³
Social media video showed flames from the cargo vessel, leading to initial speculation about an explosion.⁴
Baltimore City Fire Department officials clarified that smoke resulted from an under-deck fire rather than an explosion.⁵
CBS reported no injuries occurred, citing Baltimore authorities.⁶
The fire caused smoke to rise into the air from beneath the ship’s deck.⁷
In its most recent statement, the Baltimore Fire Department announced the fire had been contained and the vessel was moved from the area.⁸
Key Bridge connection draws attention
The incident occurred near the location of a major maritime disaster from last year.
On March 26, 2024, the container ship MV Dali experienced power failure and collided with the Francis Scott Key Bridge.⁹
That Singapore-flagged vessel’s impact caused the bridge structure to fail within seconds.¹⁰
The collapse resulted in vehicles and construction workers falling into the Patapsco River.¹¹
Quick response shows lessons learned
The fire response demonstrated that Baltimore’s emergency teams acted swiftly to contain the situation.
The Baltimore Fire Department moved to contain the blaze and remove the vessel from the area.
No injuries were reported, and the quick action prevented any major disruption.
The incident avoided the kind of catastrophic infrastructure damage that occurred during the Key Bridge collapse.
Baltimore’s port serves as an important hub for East Coast shipping operations.
The W SAPPHIRE incident shows that while maritime emergencies can still occur, proper response can prevent them from becoming disasters.
Baltimore’s first responders deserve credit for their professional handling of the emergency.
