Trump Says Israel Aid Ends by New Year’s and The Surprising Reason That Could Be Behind Netanyahu Insisting on It

Trump finally told Americans the money stops entirely by the end of the year.

Nobody in Washington wants to talk about what is already being lined up to replace it.

Or why Netanyahu actually wanted Trump to declare the aid is ending.

Netanyahu Proposed Cutting Off Israel's US Aid Months Before Trump Said Anything

Trump told Fox & Friends on November 3 that the United States will stop sending military aid to Israel by the end of 2026.

He said Israel is "a very thriving country" and added, "They don't need it."

Trump put the current aid figure at around four billion dollars a year.

The existing security agreement runs through 2028 and provides roughly three point eight billion dollars a year.

Trump said the idea came from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, not from him.

Netanyahu first raised ending the aid with Republican senators back in December 2025, and the White House was reportedly caught off guard when he brought it up.

And with Netanyahu’s future hinging on a deal among a coalition of Knesset members, the unicameral legislature of Israel, in the wake of last week's elections in Israel, Trump just gave him leverage in a powersharing deal.

Trump says the spigots off, and Bibi gets to say only he has the sway to get it turned back on.

House Democrats Tried to Gut Israel's Aid Before Trump Even Floated It

In July, more than half of House Democrats voted for an amendment to cut off Israel's military aid entirely, and it had nothing to do with Israel's strength.

That vote came after months of House Democrats souring on Netanyahu's handling of the war in Gaza, and it was punishment, not generosity.

Senator John Fetterman is one of the few Democrats left defending the aid at all, calling an end to it a mistake.

Democrats tried for months to turn the aid into leverage against Netanyahu, and Netanyahu simply took the leverage away by cutting the cord himself, on terms Israel chose instead of terms Democrats tried to impose.

Congress Is Building Israel a Defense Deal with No Public Vote Required

While everyone watched the aid number, a separate fight was unfolding over the next defense policy bill working its way through Congress.

A provision buried in that bill would create a US-Israel Defense Technology Cooperation Initiative, expanding joint development and co-production of weapons technology far beyond the missile-defense systems the two countries already build together.

The House version hands one Pentagon official, an executive agent, authority to push the initiative forward, and House leaders blocked a floor vote on stripping the provision out before passing their version of the bill in July.

Representative Thomas Massie, a Kentucky Republican, called it dangerous, warned it would create a "lopsided arrangement," and said integration on this scale should require a treaty, not a few lines buried in a defense bill.

Representative Mike Rogers, the Alabama Republican who chairs the House Armed Services Committee, insists the provision actually improves accountability by putting one official in charge.

The Senate has not passed its own version, and a final compromise is not expected before December.

Unlike the aid Trump says he’s ending, this initiative carries no yearly dollar figure for Congress to approve or reject.

Cut off the visible number, and Washington can still hand Israel something it never has to vote on again.

Senator Lindsey Graham called ending the aid a serious mistake in December 2025, then reversed completely and was actually pushing to speed up the wind-down before his death.

Senator Susan Collins says the plan conflicts with the signed agreement and calls the partnership vital.

For decades, officials in Washington treated Israel's survival as dependent on American checks.

Israel is walking away from that old arrangement in public, while a new one with far less sunlight gets built one defense bill at a time.

In the meantime, Trump declaring and end to direct military aid to Israel, just may prove to be the trump card that keeps Netanyahu not only in power, but also out of jail – and it potentially gives the green light to escalate dramatically in Iran, and in his territorial ambitions the West Bank, Lebanon, and whatever other neighbors he wants.
