Trump’s Name Is Going on a Power Line Built to Disarm Putin’s Favorite Weapon

Vladimir Putin choked off Europe's natural gas in 2022 and dared the continent to freeze.
Tiny Moldova got the same squeeze from Moscow on New Year's Day 2025.
What America is building there is the one thing Putin cannot shut off with a phone call.
The Trump Liberty Line Will Plug Moldova Into Europe and Cut Out Moscow
Trump Liberty Line is the name the U.S. Embassy in Chisinau unveiled on October 6 for a new high-voltage connection between Moldova and Romania.
The line will stretch roughly 135 miles, from Gutinaș on the Romanian side to Strășeni on the Moldovan side.
It will be the third high-voltage link between the two countries.
Moldova's government says the project will shore up its "energy security and independence."
Biden Sent Moldova Checks and Putin Cut the Gas Anyway
The American price tag is $130 million.
That is real money, and taxpayers who are tired of watching Washington bankroll Eastern Europe have every right to ask what they get for it.
This time there is an answer.
Black & Veatch, an American engineering firm, is on the project team with Moldelectrica, the state company that runs Moldova's grid.
According to the embassy, the line will "create significant opportunities for U.S. firms" and open Moldova to American nuclear power, battery storage and grid technology.
Compare that to the Biden years.
In May 2024, Secretary of State Antony Blinken went to Chisinau and pledged $135 million, with $85 million of it earmarked for Moldova's energy infrastructure.
Blinken said the money would help Moldova "resist Russian interference."
That pledge brought total U.S. support for Moldova since February 2022 to $774 million.
Seven months later, Putin cut the gas anyway.
Biden's team sent checks.
Trump's team is sending contracts to American companies.
Moscow Turned Electricity Into a Weapon Against Moldova
Moldova was part of Romania until the Soviet Union swallowed it during World War II.
It broke free in 1991, and some Moldovans still push to reunite with Romania.
It remains one of the poorest nations in Europe, with a Russian-backed breakaway region called Transnistria inside its borders.
For years, much of Moldova's electricity came from a Soviet-era plant in Transnistria burning cheap Russian gas.
That arrangement put a lever in Putin's hand, and on New Year's Day 2025 Gazprom pulled it.
Within days, families in Transnistria were heating with firewood while factories sat idle and the lights went out on a rotating schedule.
Moldova now leans on power lines running through Romania and Ukraine.
In November 2022, Russian missiles slammed into Ukraine's grid and plunged Moldova into darkness.
Every Russian missile aimed at a Ukrainian substation is a threat to a Moldovan family's living room.
The Trump Liberty Line gives Moldova a road into Europe's grid that does not run through a war zone.
Of course, the whole Ukraine-Russia conflict isn’t as clean as the Cold War Russian enemy paradigm.
Trump's Name Keeps Landing on Russia's Doorstep
This is not the first time a grateful country put Trump's name on something Putin hates.
In August 2025, Armenia and Azerbaijan signed a peace declaration at the White House that included the Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity, a transit corridor through a region Moscow long treated as its turf.
In Poland, President Karol Nawrocki is pushing for a permanent American base called Fort Trump, an idea Warsaw first floated in 2018.
The plan calls for 3,000 to 5,000 American troops at the start, and Poland ultimately wants around 15,000.
Nawrocki has said he hopes Trump will "personally attend the inauguration of 'Fort Trump.'"
Six days after Trump announced major progress on the base, a Russian Mi-8 helicopter slipped into Polish airspace for 42 seconds.
Putin keeps testing the edges, and the edges keep naming things after Trump.
The Caucasus, Poland and now Moldova.
Draw those three dots on a map and they trace the edge of the old Soviet empire.
Putin Is Losing His Grip on Moldova's Light Switch
Putin's favorite weapon in Eastern Europe has never been tanks alone – it is the threat that your heat and lights vanish the moment you cross him.
Trump's answer came in steel towers, high-voltage cable and an American contractor.
That is peace through strength the way Trump does it, and it makes Putin's blackmail a whole lot harder to pull off.
And every time a Moldovan flips on a light, the name on that line will remind the Kremlin exactly who showed up.
