Prescription Drug Prices Fall for Third Straight Month in 2026

Prescription drug prices dropped 0.9 percent in May.

That's the third consecutive monthly decline.

Since February, the cumulative drop sits at 2.39 percent – real money for seniors on fixed incomes refilling the same prescriptions every single month.

Over-the-counter medications fell 0.8 percent in May as well.

That one matters even more than the prescription number.

OTC medications carry no government backstop – no negotiated rates, no federal rebates of any kind.

Consumers pay straight market price.

Three straight months of falling OTC prices means genuine competition is working, not regulatory pressure from Washington.

Health insurance costs are following the same direction – down 6.4 percent compared to a year ago.

How TrumpRx and Most Favored Nation Pricing Broke Big Pharma

On May 12, 2025, Trump signed an executive order titled "Delivering Most-Favored-Nation Prescription Drug Pricing to American Patients."

The concept is simple: American patients should never pay more for a drug than the lowest price any comparable nation pays for the same drug.

For years, Americans bankrolled artificially cheap prices in France, Germany, and Japan.

Your grandmother on Medicare was paying $573 for Repatha – a cholesterol drug keeping her heart beating.

A patient in Germany paid a fraction of that for the same pill.

Trump called it what it was: Americans propping up foreign price controls while getting gouged at home.

The administration then went company by company, deal by deal.

Pfizer. Eli Lilly. Novo Nordisk. Amgen. AstraZeneca. Merck. Seventeen major manufacturers in total signed Most Favored Nation pricing agreements.

Then Trump launched TrumpRx.gov – a direct-to-consumer platform where Americans buy medications at those negotiated prices without a middleman taking a cut.

Ozempic dropped from $1,000 a month to $350.

Wegovy dropped from $1,350 to $350.

Repatha – the heart medication your grandmother was paying $573 for – dropped to $239.

Biden Spent Four Years Failing to Lower Drug Costs and Called It Historic

Biden's answer was letting Medicare negotiate prices for ten drugs – ten – while Big Pharma raised prices on eight of those same drugs in 2024.

Americans were paying 2.78 times more for prescriptions than comparable nations when Biden left office.

That was after four years of speeches, press releases, and promises that real relief was right around the corner.

What Biden never did was make pharmaceutical companies choose between the American market and their pricing racket.

Trump made them choose.

Seventeen of them picked the American market.

Lower Drug Prices Are Showing Up in Real Budgets Right Now

The CPI data this week showed prescription drug prices down 2.0 percent over the past year.

For a 70-year-old on Social Security filling four prescriptions a month, that is not a talking point.

That is money back in a fixed budget that hasn't had room to breathe in years.

The same media outlets that covered every Biden drug pricing announcement like a moon landing are barely reporting these numbers.

That tells you everything about whether they want your parents to know what's happening at the pharmacy counter.

Trump promised to end the era of Americans subsidizing cheap drugs for Europe.
