Trump Just Sided With Anna Paulina Luna on a Move That Has Washington Divided

The FBI used FISA to spy on Trump's 2016 campaign and tried to take him down from the inside.
Anna Paulina Luna walked into the middle of the FISA renewal fight with one demand.
Trump just said he loves it – and it may be the only thing that can break John Thune's blockade.
What Luna Is Demanding and Why
Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One on Friday, Trump was asked directly about Luna's strategy: attach the SAVE America Act to the renewal of Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act and force the Senate to take both or leave both.
"I think she's great, and I'd love to see that," Trump said.
The SAVE America Act is the election integrity package conservatives have been fighting for.
It requires proof of citizenship to register to vote in federal elections, photo ID at the ballot box, a ban on biological men in women's sports, and an end to mass mail-in balloting.
The House passed it in February by a vote of 218–213.
John Thune has let it sit in the Senate ever since.
Luna named him directly: "It's John Thune blocking voter ID."
"If we can't deliver on that, then people like John Thune do not deserve to come back to Congress."
Her position is non-negotiable: "The only way that I will even consider voting for FISA is if the SAVE America Act is attached."
The Problem Every Conservative Needs to Understand
Section 702 of FISA is not a routine intelligence tool.
In a single two-year period, the FBI ran more than 278,000 searches of Section 702 data that violated legal standards – digging into the communications of sitting members of Congress, state court judges, protesters, and people agents had personal relationships with.
In 2024 – after Congress passed reform legislation specifically designed to stop the abuses – the FBI was caught quietly running a querying tool that bypassed every single protection the new law put in place.
It took months to shut it down.
Trump himself acknowledged on Truth Social this week that he was "a victim of the worst and most illegal abuse of FISA in our Nation's History."
He knows exactly what type of abuse this program leads too.
Obama's FBI used FISA Title I authority to surveil Carter Page, a Trump campaign adviser, as part of the Crossfire Hurricane investigation.
The surveillance applications contained 17 significant inaccuracies and omissions, according to the DOJ Inspector General.
An FBI attorney later admitted altering an email used to obtain one of those orders.
Senator Chuck Grassley recently revealed that Walid Phares – another Trump campaign adviser – was subjected to a FISA surveillance order where the evidence gathered never corroborated the original claims used to justify it.
Luna says the Senate doesn't get its spy tool back until it delivers the election integrity legislation it has been promising for years.
Trump’s smartest play would be to use his bully pulpit to hammer Congress to pass the SAVE America Act and kill FISA’s 702 authority altogether.
