He turned in a performance that had even critics forced to admit the truth.

Kamala Harris insults Catholics and Trump took the chance to needle her

Vice President Kamala Harris blowing off the Al Smith Dinner in New York City became a major moment in the 2024 Election.

The dinner is a chance for both candidates to help raise money for Catholic Charities and to humanize themselves by delivering a standup routine where they mock their opponent as well as tell jokes at each other’s expense.

Kamala refused to show as her handers couldn’t trust her to perform in such a setting.

Cardinal Timothy Dolan expressed regret that she destroyed a tradition.

“Obviously still disappointed because the Vice President isn’t coming,” Cardinal Dolan said on a podcast ahead of the dinner.

Former President Donald Trump took the chance to jab at Kamala for insulting Catholics – who are 25 percent of the vote in states like Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.

Trump noted that the last Democrat Presidential candidate who didn’t attend the dinner was Walter Mondale in 1984.

Mondale – who was also a Democrat Vice President – went on to lose 49 states to Ronald Reagan in that election. 

Trump said that Mondale boycotting the dinner should serve as a warning to Kamala because the election “did not go very well for him.” 

He said anyone who insulted Catholics threatened the wrath of the divine.

“It’s been a long tradition for both Democrat and Republican candidates for President of the United States to attend this dinner, always,” Trump added. “It’s a rule — you’ve got to go to the dinner.” 

“Otherwise, bad things are going to happen to you from up there,” Trump said as he pointed toward the sky.

Trump keeps the jokes coming 

The Al Smith Dinner is also a chance for candidates to poke fun at themselves.

Trump managed to joke about his own ego and tie into the assassination attempts against him.

“Tradition holds that I’m supposed to tell a few self-deprecating jokes this evening. So here it goes. Nope. I’ve got nothing. I’ve got nothing. There’s nothing to say. I guess I just don’t see the point of taking shots at myself when other people have been shooting at me for a hell of a long time,” Trump joked. 

He also ridiculed Kamala for insulting Catholics in a social media video where Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer fed a Dorito into the mouth of a leftist influencer in what looked to many like a send-up of the sacrament of Catholics receiving communion.

Trump said she couldn’t attend because “She’s in Michigan receiving Communion from Gretchen Whitmer.”

Kamala’s intellect has been a repeated target of Trump. 

And in his Al Smith routine, Trump took down two birds with one stone by mocking Kamala’s brain power and Biden’s cognitive decline all at once.

“Right now, we have someone in the White House who can barely talk, barely put together two coherent sentences, who seems to have the mental faculties of a child. There’s a person that has nothing going. No intelligence whatsoever,” Trump said. “But enough about Kamala Harris.”
