Mitch McConnell undercuts Trump’s push for SAVE Act
Congress is coming down to the wire on a government funding bill.
As usual, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) pre-emptively surrendered and announced he would fully fund Vice President Kamala Harris’ agenda by rubberstamping the Democrats’ budget requests down to the very last penny.
McConnell removed the Republicans’ only leverage in spending negotiations which is the threat of a government shutdown.
“I think we first have to wait and see what the House sends us. My only observation about this whole discussion is the one thing you cannot have is a government shutdown. It would be politically beyond stupid for us to do that right before the election, because certainly we’d get the blame,” McConnell told reporters.
He added that House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) should immediately capitulate to Kamala’s demands.
“And one of my favorite old sayings is there’s no education in a second kick of a mule. We’ve been here before. I’m for whatever avoids the government shutdown and that’ll ultimately end up obviously being a discussion between the Democratic leader and the Speaker of the House as to how to process avoiding government shutdown,” McConnell added.
McConnell’s declaration that there would be no government shutdown undercut the effort by Former President Donald Trump to include the SAVE Act in government funding legislation.
The SAVE Act would make it a requirement to show proof of citizenship when registering to vote for federal elections.
Trump urged Republicans to shut down the government if need be to get Democrats to agree to pass the SAVE Act.
“If Republicans in the House, and Senate, don’t get absolute assurances on Election Security, THEY SHOULD, IN NO WAY, SHAPE, OR FORM, GO FORWARD WITH A CONTINUING RESOLUTION ON THE BUDGET. THE DEMOCRATS ARE TRYING TO ‘STUFF’ VOTER REGISTRATIONS WITH ILLEGAL ALIENS. DON’T LET IT HAPPEN – CLOSE IT DOWN!!!” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
Non-citizens on the voter rolls
Despite false claims made by the media and the Democrat Party, non-citizens end up on the voter rolls.
Election officials in Arizona’s Maricopa County asked the State Supreme Court to halt the mailing of ballots for state elections to 100,000 individuals.
These individuals received ballots for 20 years despite not providing proof of citizenship to register to vote as is required by Arizona law.
There is currently no such requirement at the federal level.
Conservatives argue the only reason Democrats oppose the SAVE Act is because they know there are loopholes out there that allow non-citizens to make their way onto the voter rolls.
Now, Mitch McConnell just torpedoed the best chance to close those loopholes.
