Donald Trump is in the market for a new running mate.

A top contender is emerging.

And Donald Trump wants to make this shocking announcement about his Vice President.

Florida Senator Marco Rubio moves up the shortlist

Former President Donald Trump leads President Joe Biden in the swing state and national polls, meaning he has a wide variety of options for a running mate.

He could play it safe, pick a Republican from a swing state, try to make a play for black and Hispanic voters who are drifting from the Democrat Party, or double down on his reshaping of the GOP and pick an ideological ally to serve as his heir apparent in the 2028 Election.

One name now gaining attention is Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL).

“Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., is moving up the list of former President Donald Trump’s potential Vice Presidential picks, according to six people familiar with the presumptive Republican nominee’s search for a running mate,” NBC News reports.

The Trump campaign doesn’t expect an imminent announcement but that Trump will make his selection public around June.

“The list is long, and it’s extremely early in any kind of process,” a Trump advisor told NBC. “No one has been directly reached out to yet, and I do not expect that for some time.”

Constitution could prevent Trump from picking Marco Rubio

One practical setback is the fact that both Rubio and Trump are Florida residents.

“It’s pretty clear from Trump’s orbit that Rubio is in play,” a Florida-based GOP operative said to NBC. “It makes sense because he checks almost every box if they can get past both being from Florida.”

Article Two, Section One, Clause Three of the Constitution states that “The Electors shall meet in their respective States, and vote by Ballot for two Persons, of whom one at least shall not be an Inhabitant of the same State with themselves.”

In the past, Rubio’s also raised this Constitutional objection to him appearing on the same ticket as Trump.

“We’re both from the same state, so that’s probably not going to work that way,” Rubio said.

Trump supporters worry what Rubio pick means

Marco Rubio was once the golden child of the GOP establishment.

He’s a leading warmonger who backs a blank check for Ukraine and supports every foreign intervention the Washington D.C. “Swamp” dreams up.

In 2013, Rubio served as the GOP face of the Gang of 8 Amnesty bill.

Trump won the 2016 GOP nomination – and crushed Rubio in the process – by campaigning on his opposition to the Iraq War and plan to build a border wall.

Since 2016 Rubio’s only drifted further from the base supporting red flag gun confiscation laws and union bosses gaining power by forcing Amazon workers to pay forced dues as a condition of employment.

Donald Trump can only serve one term.

His running mate starts off as the frontrunner for the GOP nomination in 2028.

And if that’s Marco Rubio, it means the Mitch McConnell’s, Mitt Romney’s, and Liz Cheney’s of the world are back in the driver’s seat.
