Ford Stuffed Its Most Powerful Crate Engine Ever Into a Bronco Built to Beat Jeep

Ford just wedged over twelve hundred horsepower into a Bronco built to steal Jeep's spotlight at SEMA.

Ford built that engine for people who want to turn classic Mustangs and pickups into monsters, not just show cars.

How Ford actually beat Jeep at its own show is the part guaranteed to make Bronco fans grin.

Megazilla 2.0 Just Became the Most Powerful Crate Engine Ford Sells

Ford calls the concept the Frostwarden, a Bronco imagined as an Arctic search and rescue rig.

It rides on 42-inch BFGoodrich tires mounted to 74Weld portal axles, with Dana 60 axles replacing the factory units and custom remote reservoir Bilstein coilovers soaking up the abuse.

Under the hood sits the Megazilla 2.0, Ford's second generation 7.3-liter V8 crate engine built off the Godzilla block found in Super Duty trucks.

Ford Racing reinforced the block and bolted on a 3.0-liter Whipple supercharger, backing it with a boost-ready camshaft, fresh pistons, bigger injectors, and an upgraded belt drive to keep the whole combination together.

The result is more than 1,200 horsepower and over 1,000 pound feet of torque, which CarBuzz calls "the most powerful OEM crate engine you can buy."

Why a Search and Rescue Bronco Needed Twelve Hundred Horsepower

Ford says it is selling this crate engine to owners who want to drop serious power into classic Mustangs, modern pickups, and anything else with room for a 7.3-liter block.

The Frostwarden exists to prove the engine works in something extreme enough to turn heads on the SEMA floor.

Work on the build started in February, stalled, then kicked back into gear in June.

The finished engine went straight from Ford's dyno to the build shop, and the completed Bronco rolled out in October, just in time for the show.

CarBuzz called the Frostwarden "a halo of halos that might make Ford the winner at this year's SEMA event," and described it as having "iced it out" against Jeep's rival Scrambler concept on the show floor.

How Ford's Crate Engines Went from Four Hundred to Twelve Hundred Horsepower in Six Years

Ford's crate engine lineup has climbed fast.

The 7.3-liter Godzilla crate engine launched around 430 horsepower for roughly 8,150 dollars.

The supercharged 5.2-liter Predator crate engine, pulled straight from the GT500, arrived rated at 760 horsepower and was once the most powerful street legal engine Ford had ever built.

The original Megazilla pushed that further to around 615 horsepower before Ford ever bolted on a supercharger.

Megazilla 2.0 doubles that output and then some, landing north of 1,200 horsepower in a crate engine regular buyers can order through a Ford dealership.

Ford is not stopping at one new engine either.

Alongside Megazilla 2.0, Ford Performance is also rolling out a supercharged 5.0-liter Coyote crate engine rated at more than 800 horsepower, aimed at buyers who want serious power without the bulk of a big block.

Putting twelve hundred horsepower in a Bronco instead of another Mustang lets Ford prove the engine can survive off-road punishment a drag strip would never test.

Ford sells both crate engines through its dealer network and the Ford Performance parts catalog, the same channel that already moves the Godzilla and Predator engines to backyard builders across the country.

The Frostwarden is not a factory promise of a production Bronco Raptor R with this engine inside it.

Jeep Brought a Concept and Ford Brought a Part Number

Jeep rolled its own concept into the same Las Vegas hall this week, built around the Wrangler and Gladiator platform it has sold for years.

Those trucks top out at a 285 horsepower V6 in the showroom, with a turbocharged four-cylinder as the only other factory option.

Jeep has not announced a crate V8 program of its own, let alone one that can touch four-digit horsepower.

Ford, meanwhile, already has three generations of big-block crate engines on the shelf, from the 430 horsepower Godzilla to the 1,200-plus horsepower Megazilla 2.0, all available to order through a dealership.

A part number in a catalog keeps selling long after the show lights go dark, and that is the gap Ford is actually selling with the Frostwarden.
