Trump Says the Media Brutalized Katie Zacharia and Told Her to Walk Away

Katie Zacharia lasted one week before Donald Trump told her to reconsider the job.

Trump says the media brutalized her, then all but gave her an exit.

He insists he never fired her, but a senior official already called it a transition.

Trump Told Her She Does Not Need This

Trump told reporters on the South Lawn Friday that Zacharia has been "brutalized by the media" since her first briefing.

Maybe it's not for her, he said, adding that he wants her "to have a good life."

He said he told her directly: if I were you, I'd reconsider.

Is this for you, Katie, he said he asked her. Honestly, you don't need this.

He said she answered that the job is a lot tougher than she expected, and that he told her, welcome to the world of Trump.

Trump pointed to a rough Hannity interview and a tense Fox and Friends appearance as proof the coverage has turned hostile fast.

I just want her to be happy, he said.

Trump added that he has never seen anything like the coverage she has gotten, calling it something he has "never seen anything like… actually."

He also brought up her family, saying he met her husband and kids the day before and calling the whole scene "like a picture postcard," which he said is exactly why he told her to reconsider.

A Senior Official Says She Is Transitioning Out

A senior White House official told Fox News Digital that Zacharia is transitioning out of the press secretary role.

Trump pushed back on the idea that he fired her, insisting the decision is hers to make.

Those two stories do not fully line up, and the White House has not picked a date or a successor.

The @PressSec account Karoline Leavitt used has not posted since October 7 and never switched over to Zacharia at all.

White House communications director Steven Cheung, asked about her before the news broke, called her a "fabulous and wonderful addition to the team."

A separate, unnamed official told the liberal MS NOW she "needs to get much better, fast" and predicted a tenure shorter than Anthony Scaramucci's ten days as communications director in 2017.

One of those two reactions came from the president on camera.

The other came from an anonymous source feeding a network that spent years trying to delegitimize this White House.

Before any of this, Zacharia built her name as a conservative media commentator, then spent about six weeks as a DHS deputy assistant secretary for public affairs, then moved to a senior communications role at Trump Media and Technology Group.

That is three jobs inside Trump's orbit in under a year, the kind of rapid rise reserved for people a president trusts to handle whatever he hands them next.

Her Rocky Debut Did Not Deserve a Scaramucci Comparison

Zacharia's first briefing on October 13 ran fourteen minutes and took three questions.

She stumbled once, calling her husband "my president" before catching herself.

Karoline Leavitt's first briefing ran 47 minutes, Sean Spicer's ran 79, and Sarah Sanders ran 23 back in 2017.

Every press secretary in this administration has had a rough first outing, and only this one got treated like a national referendum on her fitness for the job.

On Hannity, Zacharia admitted she never passed the bar and holds no law license, a fact Trump himself had glossed over when he called her an attorney at her announcement.

She defended herself by saying she had been on the job less than eight hours when the briefing happened, and that she did her very best.

A seven day news cycle built entirely around a rookie's nerves and a résumé technicality is not journalism, it is a pile-on, and Donald Trump just told the cameras he noticed.
