Michelle Obama Tells Jon Stewart What She Really Thinks About Her Daughters

Michelle Obama just told Jon Stewart the one thing her fans never expected to hear.

The confession came on her podcast, during a conversation about her daughters.

What she said about missing Malia and Sasha is not what anyone assumed.

Michelle Obama built her brand as the nation's most relatable mom, the one who made working motherhood look effortless.

Michelle Obama sat down with her brother Craig Robinson and guest Jon Stewart for the latest episode of IMO with Michelle Obama and Craig Robinson.

The topic turned to empty nest life now that Malia and Sasha are grown and out of the house.

Stewart asked the obvious question every parent gets asked.

Her answer was not the warm, sentimental reflection her fans were trained to expect.

"I don't miss 'em," Michelle Obama said flatly.

She kept going in case anyone thought she was joking.

"I don't. I love them. I'm going to see them tonight for dinner. I love them," she said.

Michelle Obama then contrasted her reaction to her husband's.

"Barack cried when they went to college, and I was like, 'Bye, goodbye,'" she said.

Michelle Obama did not stop at indifference.

She described active motherhood itself as a source of dread she is relieved to be free of.

"Now, Friday nights aren't wrecked with terror and fear about, 'Where are you, where are you?'" she said.

She framed her post parenting life as a personal reward she earned.

"I'm good. Look at all this meaning I have," Michelle Obama said.

She went further, describing her new freedom in almost proud terms.

"I have a wonderful pattern. I love my schedule; I have a great schedule, and it's all mine," she said.

Then she took a shot at fathers in general to explain the gap between her reaction and Barack's.

"I think fathers can be that way because you weren't there from 6:00 to 9:00 at night; you missed a lot of it," Michelle Obama said.

Fox News and the Daily Wire both flagged the moment within hours of the episode dropping, and the clip spread fast among users who found the tone jarring.

A Pattern of Oversharing That Keeps Blowing Back on Her

This is not the first time Michelle Obama's podcast candor has landed her in a mess she made herself.

Earlier this year she drew fire on Fox News for comments minimizing the biological experience of childbirth and motherhood.

She has also used the same show to joke about the long-running divorce rumors surrounding her marriage to Barack Obama, without ever fully putting the speculation to rest.

Each time, the pattern is the same: Michelle Obama reaches for a raw, unscripted moment to prove she is not performing for the cameras, and the raw moment becomes the story instead of whatever project she was promoting.

IMO was supposed to be Michelle Obama's next act after the White House and the Becoming book tour, a place to build on the "having it all" persona she spent a decade selling to American women.

Instead the show keeps producing the opposite effect, handing critics fresh tape of a woman who sounds bored by the family she wrote an entire bestselling memoir about.

She Sold Herself as America's Most Devoted Mom for a Decade

Barack Obama built two presidential campaigns and a legacy brand around Michelle Obama as the anchor of a warm, tight knit family.

Her memoir Becoming leaned on that same image, selling millions of copies partly on the strength of her portrayal as a hands on mother juggling the White House and her daughters' childhoods.

Now that image is competing against her words, on her microphone, with no press aide around to soften them.

This was not a hot mic slip.

She said "I don't miss 'em" twice for clarity and added a jab at fathers on her way out of the answer.

That is the actual worldview underneath the brand, and Jon Stewart's podcast just broadcast it to anyone paying attention.
