Colin Kaepernick knelt during the National Anthem and turned patriotism into a loyalty test for an entire country.

Ten years later a Cubs fan at Wrigley Field decided that test still had one more answer left in it.

What one man did next to a kid who wouldn't stand is now dividing an entire ballpark full of Americans.

Redcoats used to march through colonial towns and force colonists to bow or salute on command.

Sunday at Wrigley Field, an older Cubs fan borrowed that exact playbook to, in many Americans’ minds, defend the flag.

It happened right before the Cubs took on the Minnesota Twins.

Everyone around him stood for "The Star-Spangled Banner." One young man stayed in his seat.

The Slap Was Real but So Was the Kid's Right to Sit

Let's be clear about something first: the kid should have stood up. Sitting through the anthem in a stadium full of people who earned their seats the same way you did is graceless, and no amount of First Amendment law makes it look good.

But an older man behind him decided gracelessness was a crime, leaned in, and told him to get up.

The kid didn't move.

So he ended the standoff with a single open-handed swat to the back of the kid's skull.

The kid stood up immediately, not because he suddenly understood what the song means, but because a stranger just hit him and he didn't want to get hit again.

The older man reportedly told him, "Thank you, thank you so much young man," like he'd just taught a lesson instead of committed a battery.

Chicago police confirm they're aware of the video. No report has been filed yet. The Cubs haven't said a word.

That should tell you something. Nobody involved is treating this like the patriotic teaching moment it's being sold as online.

Forcing Reverence With a Fist Is Not Patriotism, It's Control

Here's the part almost nobody arguing about this video wants to sit with: the entire point of the flag this man says he was defending is that no one gets to physically force you to salute it.

That's the whole idea the country was founded on. Kings compel. Free men persuade.

And if standing at attention is the standard, where was that same energy for the rest of the anthem? Nobody in that section was demanding every word be sung out loud, hand over heart, phone away, beer down. The standard only got enforced the moment it gave one man an excuse to put his hands on somebody.

That's not reverence. That's a grown man looking for a reason.

Compare that to what real defense of the flag actually looks like. In 1976, Cubs outfielder Rick Monday spotted two men on the Dodger Stadium turf trying to burn an American flag, and got to them before they could strike the match.

"They were dousing it," Monday said of the moment, describing the can of fluid the protesters pulled out.

Monday stopped an act of destruction against a piece of cloth that belongs to every American. He never touched the protesters. He didn't need to hit anyone to make his point, and he got a standing ovation for it.

The Wrigley Field fan didn't stop anyone from destroying anything. He hit a kid for sitting quietly and minding his own business, then thanked him for complying.

One of those men understood what the flag stands for. The other one used it as a license.

Every time a clip like this goes viral, it becomes free ammunition for the people who actually want to see this country move further left.

Zohran Mamdani doesn't have to argue that conservatives are authoritarian bullies when a video does it for him. Neither does Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

They just have to hit share.

A generation already skeptical of anything that smells like enforced patriotism just watched an old man confirm every stereotype the left has been selling them, and he did it in a Cubs jersey, on camera, for the whole country to see.

Real patriots don't need a fist to win an argument, and they definitely don't need one to win a news cycle.

The kid embarrassed himself for thirty seconds by staying seated. The old man may have cost the cause thirty years of kids who now think standing for the anthem means standing next to a guy who'll hit you for disagreeing.
