A top Republican wants the NFL to make one change that left the woke outrage mob fuming
Professional football is the most popular sport in the country.
But the NFL’s leadership is becoming increasingly woke.
And a top Republican wants the NFL to make one change that left the woke outrage mob fuming.
Senate Republican wants the Washington Redskins name to return
The NFL’s Washington Redskins resisted calls for decades from the woke outrage mob to change the team’s mascot.
Washington began using the Redskins nickname in 1933 when the team was playing in Boston.
The summer of 2020 after George Floyd’s death saw corporate America go into a woke struggle session.
The Redskins name was dropped in the hysteria and the Washington Football Team was born.
Washington chose the Commanders to be its new nickname in 2022.
Fans of the team weren’t happy with the new name but Commanders owner Josh Harris claimed there was no way the Redskins name was coming back.
U.S. Senator Steve Daines (R-MT) called the NFL’s decision to sign off on Washington dropping the Redskins nickname a “case of woke gone wrong” during an appearance on Fox News Channel’s America Reports.
Daines represents the Blackfeet Nation Indian tribe in Montana and wants to see the Redskins name return.
The inspiration for the Indian chief that the Redskins used as a logo was a member of the Blackfeet tribe.
“We were calling out leaders in case of really, woke gone wrong,” Daines said. “The irony that they were canceling Native American culture as the DEI movement went way too far.”
The woke outrage mob and leftists might have been angry at the Redskins logo but most of the Blackfeet Nation supported it.
“This is honoring a Blackfeet chief who was born in Montana. He is highly esteemed,” Daines explained. “The Blackfeet tribe of Montana, their current chairman and tribal council signed a letter in strong support to bring the logo back. It honors Indian Country.”
NFL could allow the Redskins logo to return
The Redskins are looking to move to a new stadium in Washington, D.C. at the location of Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium.
Daines said that he supported a bill to allow the Commanders to build a new stadium there as part of negotiations with the team about restoring the Redskins nickname.
“We have good discussions with the NFL and with the Commanders,” Daines stated. “There’s good faith in negotiations going forward that’s going to allow this logo to be used again. Perhaps revenues going to a foundation that could help Native Americans in sports and so forth. We’re making good progress and, based on the good faith negotiations, I made a decision to support this bill yesterday in the committee.”
Former Blackfeet Nation leader Blackie Wetzel created a portrait of Blackfeet chief John Two Guns White Calf that was used for the Redskins logo.
John Two Guns White Calf’s descendants and Wetzel’s son and grandson have called for the Redskins logo to be restored.
“(Wetzel) had a vision to use the proud symbol to benefit his people,” Daines told the Senate. “This morning, I spoke to his son, Ryan Wetzel, about the ongoing negotiations and the progress that has been made.”
Daines said he would support giving the land to the Commanders for a new stadium if they honored their commitment to return to the Redskins nickname.
