Trey Gowdy made a mysterious comment about taking over for Paul Ryan

Paul Ryan triggered a massive political earthquake when he announced he was not running for re-election.

Pundits immediately began playing the parlor game of trying to guess his successor.

That’s when Trey Gowdy made a mysterious comment that led everyone to think he was about to throw his hat into the ring.

Gowdy wished Ryan well in his life after Congress but stated that the Constitution did not dictate that the Speaker of the House be a member of Congress.

The Daily Caller reports:

“Congressman Trey Gowdy reminded everyone Wednesday that the Speaker of the House does not need to actually be a sitting congressman.

The Constitution dictates “the House of Representatives shall choose their Speaker and other Officers,” but it does not stipulate that you have to be a sitting member of Congress to run for the leadership position. Gowdy conveniently pointed that out at the end of his statement on Speaker Paul Ryan’s decision not to seek re-election at the end of his term.

After calling Ryan the “smartest kid in the class” and wishing him, his wife, and their three children “all the best,” the South Carolina Republican addressed “those within Congress who always seemed to have a better idea or a smarter strategy, now is your chance to run for Speaker.”

“To those outside of Congress who always seemed to have a better idea or a smarter strategy,” he added. “You do not have to be a member of the House to be Speaker of the House and hence, now is your chance to run for Speaker.”

Gowdy has also announced he is not running for re-election.

That led reporters to race to his office to question if these remarks meant Gowdy would be willing to assume the role of speaker even though he was retiring from Congress.

His office shot that rumor down with an emphatic statement.

The Daily Caller also reports:

“When asked for comment on the possibility he becomes the first non-sitting member to become the Speaker of the House in U.S. history, a spokeswoman for his office responded simply “not a chance.”

Yes, as long as he keeps the House independent of the executive branch as the Founders intended.

  2. I think Trey would be a better Fed. Prosecutor, that is where his heart is, you can tell by the way he questions people. One person above said that Trey wanted to stick a knife in Trump’s back, I don’t think that is it, I think he was very frustrated with all of his hard work and the people he would question would sit there and lie and get away with it, like Hillary. Trump may not have been his first pick, but he was never disrespectful, they have just burnt him out.

  5. Make no mistake Paul Ryan saw the handwriting on the wall when he opposed Donald Trump, before and after he became POTUS. Patriotic American Citizens who elected Donald Trump, by the grace of ALMIGHTY GOD, asked for and received an anti-Globalist to lead our Judeo-Christian Constitutional Republic from the bowels of evil globalism. Ryan is a RINO [republican in name only] he is part of the DC DINO-RINO establishment swampers. He has only worked with our President when his polls began to decline quite rapidly, both in his state of Wisconsin and as House Speaker. Ryan knows if he pursues reelection he would be defeated by his Constitutional Conservative opposing him in WI. Of all the congressional legislature in DC Gowdy is by far the best choice. He is a no nonsense legislature who abides wholeheartedly by The Constitution. Gowdy will work with, not against, President Trump to MAGA, Buy American Again, American Citizens FIRST and he certainly can handle any DINO regressive including Pelosi in the legislature and/or judicial who tries to circumvent The Constitution. POTUS needs him and should support his election to House Speaker, its an excellent move.

We have not had a really good Speaker of the House in a very long time. Can’t say much good about Senate leadership either.

  7. Guess what there is nothing saying that new states were going to be allowed in the constitution either. I hope you are a good democrat and go somewhere your needed like South America. I here they need more liberals done there.

  8. Gowdy has shown himself to be honest and forthright. He’d make an excellent Speaker of the House.

    Bring back Newt.

    • tgw says:

Now you are talking. Would be great. But doubt he would come back, as he has had opportunity to be in this administration, and voiced, he felt he could do more from the outside .
But, was nice thought any way George .

  12. Ron says:

Tray Gowdy says we should trust Mueller. That should disqualify him from a position of leadership.

  13. Mead Carlson says:

Gowdy would be an improvement over Ryan (anyone would)But I am not sure how much he backs Trump and his agenda. All these Republicans quitting is a bad sign. Do they know something we don’t? It is like they are trying to give the House to the Democrats so the the impeachment of Trump can begin. Dems are united in total opposition to rump Rebublicans are squabbling over everything and can’t do aything but join the Dems in opposiition to Trump.

    • tgw says:

Oh I think many republicans would be pleased if they lost house. Then they could walk around with there chest stuck out stating how effective they were.
They want the old establishment to return , so they can get there retirement.

    • . larry says:

All the Republicans that are quitting are the ones that know they will not be able to win another term. They are the ones that were not supporting the President…….. let them go. I am disappointed in Trey Gowdy ……… he talked a lot but did not produce the way he talked. Why I do not now.

  14. ernest says:

    we need term limits
    voter ID
no retirement[ it is supposed to be a honor to serve that’s what they tell us at jury duty]
end lobbyist. they serve us not them .

I like Gowdy , but he’s seemed to waffle on a few maters recently ..Jordan would be my fav.

  16. MarkOwen says:

Mr. Gowdy isone ofthe most honest men in politics today. No one better suited for the Speakers job than he. But hedoes not want it. Ryan is a backstabbing prick. Should have been run out long ago.

  17. Rick says:

For those who think Mr. Gowdy would make a good Speaker be assured what DC doesn’t need is another Lawyer
trying to do the peoples business. The whole cast of house characters pretty much are Swampers in their own right.
What really bothers me is why so many Americans keep sending these bums back to DC? Why anyone who votes
democratic is beyond belief. Which really tells me you have either never taken US History in school or got such a
dumbed down version you would never know Democrats are mainly the culprit going back to the civil war era.

    • Timothy Colbath says:

Rick – you have hit the nail squarely on the head. Democrats apparently have zero understanding of history. Starting with the democrats voting against every civil rights issue in history – beginning with the freeing of the slaves. Democrats founded the KKK. Democrats voted against desegregation. Democrats voted against a woman’s right to vote. Democrats started Planned Parenthood to exterminate the people of color. Democrats feel they are above the laws of the land that apply to all the rest of us. Democrats want to disarm American’s – except for their security. Why would anyone vote democrat in the 21st century?

    • Erich says:

Why do people vote for democrats is very easy to answer. For all the free stuff. It really is that simple. If we could find a way for Republicans to give away everyone else’s money, it would be fair. Personally, if you are on any type of welfare programs, accepting money or services without putting any money into the system, you should not be able to vote. That is basically the same as allowing the house and Senate to give themselves raises whenever they feel the need.

    • Chuck says:

Well you have obviously also taken a dumbed down northern version of history. There never was a civil war. A civil war is a war between factions within one country and the southern states had seceded and formed a sovereign nation, the Confederate States of America. There is nothing in the Constitution that precludes a state or states from leaving the union. Therefore what we had in 1861 was an invasion of the CSA by the union army. Hence a war of northern aggression. at the behest of Abraham Lincoln, who was a despot. He suspended habeus corpus, jailed those who disagreed with him, and shut down newspapers that published opinions contrary to his.
