The one person who could end Nancy Pelosi’s career just gave her a resignation ultimatum
Nancy Pelosi hoped this day would never come.
But it’s here and it’s bad news for the Democrats.
And that’s because one person who could end Nancy Pelosi’s career just gave her a resignation ultimatum.
In a podcast interview with The Intercept, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez explained that the Democrats needed new leadership and that it was time to toss House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer overboard and move on to a new generation of leaders.
“I do think we need new leadership in the Democratic Party,” Ocasio-Cortez explained. “I think one of the things that I have struggled with, I think that a lot of people struggle with, is the internal dynamics of the House has made it such that there [are] very little options for succession.”
Ocasio-Cortez worried that the party was set for failure “with a lack of real grooming on the next generation of leadership.”
In the interview, Ocasio-Cortez expressed her concern that there was no succession plan in place to elevate the next generation of Democrat leaders.
“My concern – and I acknowledge this as a failing, as something that we need to sort out – is that there isn’t a plan,” Ocasio-Cortez added. “How do we fill that vacuum? Because if you create that vacuum, there are so many nefarious forces at play to fill that vacuum with something even worse. And so, the actual sad state of affairs is that there are folks more conservative than even they are willing to kind of fill that void.”
Those changes may come about by force.
When Pelosi won the Speaker’s gavel in 2019, she pledged to only serve two more terms.
So this Congress should theoretically be her last.
And Chuck Schumer is up for re-election in 2022.
If Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez wants to replace him with a new generation, she can challenge him in the Democrat primary.
