Mitt Romney turned around and did the one thing Donald Trump will never forgive
Mitt Romney is one of the biggest never-Trump RINOs in Congress.
Romney campaigned for Senate in 2018 begging for Trump’s endorsement.
But then, Romney turned around and did the one thing Donald Trump will never forgive.
The biggest moment of Donald Trump’s presidency was declaring a national emergency to build a wall along the southern border.
This allows Trump to use military construction funds to build the wall.
But Congress passed a resolution of disapproval.
And Mitt Romney joined Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer in opposing resident Trump’s declaration of national emergency.
“This is a vote for the Constitution and for the balance of powers that is at its core,” Romney said. “For the Executive Branch to override a law passed by Congress would make it the ultimate power rather than a balancing power.”
This is not a vote against border security. In fact, I agree that a physical barrier is urgently needed to help ease the humanitarian crisis at the southern border, and the administration already has $4.5 billion available existing authority to fund a barrier–even without an emergency declaration.
I am seriously concerned that overreach by the Executive Branch is an invitation to further expansion and future presidents. We experience a similar erosion of congressional authority with President Obama’s unilateral immigration orders– which I strenusouly (sic) opposed. In the case before us now, where Congress has enacted specific policy, to consent to an emergency declaration would be both inconsistent with my beliefs and contrary to my oath to defend the Constitution.
This is not unexpected.
Once again, Mitt Romney has shown he flip flops more than a pancake.
During the 2018 Senate race, Mitt Romney retracted all the bad things he had to say about President Trump to appeal to his fan base – ultimately to win a seat in Congress.
But now that he’s got his Senate seat locked up for the next six years, he showed his true colors by betraying Trump on the border wall.
And this is a betrayal that Trump and his supporters will not soon forget.
