Mitch McConnell tried to purge Trump and ended up getting some bad news about his future
Establishment Republicans like Mitch McConnell thought they could manipulate impeachment to kick Donald Trump out of the Republican Party.
Anti-Trump Republicans like Mitch McConnell bet the GOP’s 2022 and 2024 electoral prospects on the notion that purging the MAGA movement was the path to victory.
But when Mitch McConnell tried to purge Trump he ended up getting some bad news about his future.
Mitch McConnell is one of the most powerful leaders in the history of the Senate because of his iron like grip on the Republican conference.
McConnell wins the fights he picks because he knows where his votes are.
But on impeachment, McConnell’s instincts failed him as he ripped Donald Trump in a speech after the trial ended in acquittal where McConnell essentially called for Joe Biden’s Justice Department to indict Trump over the January 6 riot at the Capitol.
Wisconsin Senator Ron Johnson was furious over McConnell’s remarks and in an interview ripped McConnell for dividing Republicans and making it seem like Republican Senators were against Trump.
“You got Leader McConnell voting not guilty, not to convict but then just providing a scathing speech on the floor of the Senate that does not reflect, I think, the majority of our conference. I haven’t done a whip check to find out what exactly how everybody thinks but you kinda put two and two together by their votes. So you’ve got our leader out there really representing himself and that is his right to do. But at the same time, he has to realize as our leader, what he says reflects on us. I didn’t particularly like it,” Johnson stated.
Johnson continued on saying McConnell’s remarks threatened to alienate Trump supporters at a moment when the GOP stood a strong chance of winning back majorities in Congress and needed Party unity.
“We can’t afford to lose in 2022. We have to unity our party, our movement. And there is certainly elements of the Republican Party that never liked Trump and really thinks this is a great opportunity to purge the party of Trump. But as I have been advising my colleagues the group of people who have been supporting Trump, the hundreds of thousands of people that attend those Trump rallies those are people that love this country, that would never have done what happened on January 6 which is why I was not concerned. That is a group of people that love freedom. That is a group of people we need to unity and keep on our side,” Johnson added.
Johnson’s remarks were a warning shot to McConnell.
McConnell plans on waging civil war against Trump supporters and their candidates in 2022 Senate primaries.
If McConnell inflames party tensions by attacking Trump and the candidates he backs and it leads to the GOP falling short in taking back the majority in 2022, there will be a reckoning in the Party over its leadership.
