Mike Pence made a decision about Trump that instantly blew up in his face
Since leaving office, the status of the relationship between Mike Pence and Donald Trump has been the subject of much speculation.
How this relationship plays out could decide the 2024 GOP nomination.
And Mike Pence made a decision about Trump that instantly blew up in his face.
The first step in Donald Trump’s political comeback is a speech on Sunday to the Conservative Political Action Conference in Florida.
CPAC has been a conservative gathering held annually since the 1970s where the biggest stars in the conservative movement speak to activists about the direction of the movement.
But Mike Pence turned down an opportunity to address the CPAC crowd.
Fox News reports:
Former Vice President Mike Pence has declined an invitation to attend this year’s Conservative Political Action Conference, Fox News has learned.
Pence was invited to speak at the annual event but turned it down, according to a source familiar with the event planning.
Conservative Political Action Conference Executive Director Dan Schneider told MSNBC that Pence made a major mistake in turning down the group’s invitation to address the conference.
“We are pleased that the President will be joining us, and we’re disappointed the Vice President’s not coming. We think it’s a mistake for him not to come. We conservatives think of Vice President Pence with great honor and dignity. He is a real champion of conservatism,” Schneider stated.
Schneider added that Pence would be “greeted very warmly” by the crowd and that he hoped Pence reconsidered and addressed CPAC as he has many times in the past.
Many suspect Pence turned down the invitation so as not to be compared to Donald Trump in terms of laying claim to the mantle of frontrunner for the GOP nomination in 2024.
Pence and his team may also have feared being booed by Trump supporters still angry over Pence exercising his constitutional duty to count the results of the Electoral College.
Either way, this move will likely distance Mike Pence from the conservative base should he run for President in 2024.
