Semafor already broke the news that New Jersey Democrat Senator Robert Menendez is the target of a criminal investigation.
That was just the first shoe to drop.
Now the Wall Street Journal is reporting that federal prosecutors are investigating if Menendez’s wife, Nadine Arslanian, received improper gifts or benefits from individuals looking for special favors from the Senator.
The Journal reports:
The probe dates back to at least 2019. Late that year, court records show, federal investigators executed search warrants at the home and office of Wael Hana, the founder of IS EG Halal, an Edgewater, N.J., company that was designated the only business allowed to certify halal meat being exported to Egypt. Mr. Hana is an associate of Ms. Arslanian, according to the people familiar with the matter.
Prosecutors were investigating possible undisclosed foreign lobbying in the U.S. and other potential violations of federal law, according to court documents filed in 2020 by Lawrence Lustberg, a lawyer for Mr. Hana, who was seeking the return of property seized by the government.
A consultant advising Senator Menendez offered a statement that simply said he was aware of the investigation.
“As always, should any official inquiries be made, the Senator is available to provide any assistance that is requested of him or his office,” the statement read.
Senator Menendez faced similar corruption charges back in 2015 when prosecutors alleged he accepted $1 million in flights, vacations, and gifts from a Florida doctor in exchange for helping him obtain visas for his girlfriends.
But it ended in a mistrial in 2017 and a judge acquitted Senator Menendez on the remaining counts in 2018.
Senator Menendez is up for re-election in 2024.
Given his past brushes with corruption charges and the intense interest federal prosecutors have in this case, it is an open question as to if Menendez will appear on the ballot.
But Senator Menendez does have one thing going for him – and that is the fact that he is a Democrat.
In today’s day and age of the Biden administration weaponizing the Justice Department, there seems to be a separate standard of justice for Democrats.
