GOP official died after JB Pritzker refused this one request from Trump

Illinois sanctuary policies have become a rallying cry for the Left.
Democrats claim they're protecting immigrant communities.
And now a GOP official has died after JB Pritzker refused this one request from Trump.
A drunk driver with weapons and drugs killed two innocent people
Mike and Gail Clayton spent their lives serving their community in Charleston, Illinois.
Mike served on the Coles County Board as a Republican elected official.
The couple believed in supporting local businesses and were familiar faces at the Charleston Farmer's Market.¹
On October 24, their lives were cut short when a van crossed the center line and struck their vehicle.
The driver behind the wheel was 34-year-old Edwin Pacheco-Meza, an illegal alien from Honduras who entered the country as an unknown got-away.²
Police found an extended magazine, firearm ammunition, drugs, and an open container of alcohol in his vehicle.²
Pacheco-Meza was arrested and charged with reckless homicide and driving under the influence.
His passenger, 18-year-old Juan Morales-Martinez from Guatemala, was also arrested on drug possession and weapons charges.²
Morales-Martinez had crossed the border in December 2023 and was released into the interior by the Biden administration.²
ICE tried to do its job but Illinois sanctuary policies got in the way
Immigration and Customs Enforcement immediately lodged detainers against both illegal aliens after their arrests.
These detainers are simple requests asking local jails to notify ICE when criminal illegal aliens are about to be released.
That way ICE can take them into custody for deportation before they're back on American streets.
Clark County Jail ignored the detainers because of Illinois' sanctuary state policy under the TRUST Act.³
Gov. J.B. Pritzker signed the Illinois Way Forward Act in 2021, which strengthened the original 2017 TRUST Act signed by Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner.
These laws prohibit Illinois law enforcement from cooperating with ICE detainers unless accompanied by a criminal warrant.⁴
ICE officers waited outside the jail and arrested Morales-Martinez when he was released.²
But the damage was already done.
Trump officials just exposed the deadly consequences of sanctuary policies
"Two innocents were killed because this criminal illegal alien chose to drive under the influence," Department of Homeland Security Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin said in a statement.²
She laid the blame squarely at Pritzker's feet for creating policies that shield criminal illegal aliens from deportation.
"President Trump and Secretary Noem have unleashed ICE and CBP in Illinois to restore law-and-order and remove criminal illegal aliens from our communities," McLaughlin added. "Anyone who is in the U.S. illegally and thinks they can roam free while breaking our laws and harming Americans is in for a rude awakening."²
State Representative Adam Niemerg, whose district includes Coles County, placed the responsibility directly on Pritzker.
"This really lands at the feet of Gov. J.B. Pritzker with the sanctuary state and sanctuary city policies," Niemerg said. "Illegal immigration has become a major problem under both the Biden and Pritzker administrations."⁵
Niemerg pointed out this wasn't just a Chicago problem anymore.
"This is Coles County," he explained. "Two upstanding, honest citizens — one of whom served on the Coles County Board — are dead because of the insane policies our Governor continues to support."⁶
Illinois has become ground zero in Trump's battle against sanctuary states
The Trump administration has made Illinois one of three main targets in its fight against sanctuary policies.
In September 2025, ICE sent letters to Illinois, California, and New York demanding they honor detainers against criminal illegal aliens.
Illinois and New York both refused while California ignored the request entirely.⁷
DHS followed up by warning it would work with the Department of Justice "to pursue all appropriate measures" against states that continue obstructing immigration enforcement.⁷
The Illinois Attorney General's office refused to even accept the letter from ICE.⁷
"These dangerous sanctuary policies, often combined with cashless bail for serious crimes, allow criminal illegal aliens to be released back into American communities," McLaughlin said at the time.⁷
The Department of Justice sued Illinois, Chicago, and Cook County in February 2025, arguing that sanctuary policies violate the Supremacy Clause of the U.S. Constitution.⁸
The lawsuit cited more than 13,500 immigrants arrested in Illinois by ICE from 2016 to 2025, with many charged with serious crimes.⁸
Pritzker keeps doubling down while innocent Americans die
Pritzker appeared before the House Oversight Committee in June 2025 to defend his sanctuary policies.
"Illinois follows the law," Pritzker claimed. "I have consistently said violent criminals have no place on our streets and if they are undocumented, I want them out of Illinois and out of our country."⁹
That's exactly what ICE was trying to do when Clark County Jail ignored their detainer request.
Illinois sanctuary laws have cost taxpayers an estimated $3 billion while providing free healthcare, driver's licenses, and housing assistance to illegal aliens.¹⁰
The state's healthcare benefits program for undocumented immigrants alone ballooned to $1.1 billion.¹⁰
Meanwhile, Illinois sheriffs are frustrated with the TRUST Act.
A survey by Capitol News Illinois found that over two-thirds of responding sheriffs want the law repealed or changed.¹¹
"What are they going to do to you?" Adams County Sheriff Anthony Grootens asked about the consequences of violating state law.¹¹
Mike and Gail Clayton's deaths represent exactly what sanctuary opponents warned would happen.
Pritzker's policies prevented ICE from removing criminal illegal aliens before they could hurt anyone.
Now two more American families are grieving because Illinois Democrats put politics ahead of public safety.
