Donald Trump just got some really bad news about Trey Gowdy
Donald Trump thrilled supporters when he announced that former South Carolina Congressman Trey Gowdy would join his legal team to fend off the Democrats’ attempted coup.
But then the other shoe dropped.
And Donald Trump just got some really bad news about Trey Gowdy.
Trump Attorney Jay Sekulow previously announced Gowdy was joining the Trump team as a counsel to the President.
Gowdy was expected to appear on TV and fill Rudy Giuliani’s role as the public face of the Trump legal defense team.
But before the President departed for a campaign rally in Minnesota, Trump revealed that lobby rules and regulations for former members of Congress prevented Gowdy from coming aboard until January.
The Hill reports:
President Trump on Thursday said former Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-S.C.) can’t to join his outside legal team for a “couple months” because of lobbying rules one day after it was announced that Gowdy would serve as his counsel.
“Trey Gowdy is a terrific guy,” Trump told reporters outside the White House as he departed for a campaign rally.
“I think there’s a problem with — he can’t start for another couple months because of lobbying rules and regulations,” he added. “So you’ll have to ask about that. I just heard that Trey Gowdy can’t start til some time after January because of the lobbying rules and regulations. So I don’t know. We’ll have to see.”
Trump’s lead personal attorney, Jay Sekulow, said Wednesday night that Gowdy would serve as counsel to the resident in response to the House’s impeachment inquiry.
Since Democrats plan to rush impeachment through by the New Year, this means Gowdy will never join the President’s defense team.
Many Trump supporters consider this to be a significant blow to the efforts to beat back the Democrats’ coup attempt.
