Donald Trump just got some bad news about one unthinkable betrayal
Every investigative path Robert Mueller has pursued has turned into a dead end.
But the special counsel’s witch hunt just received a new lease on life.
That’s because Donald Trump just got some very bad news about unthinkable act of betrayal.
When the FBI raided Trump Organization fixer Michael Cohen’s office in April after special counsel Mueller referred possible financial crimes to prosecutors in the Southern District of New York, the media immediately began to speculate that it was only a matter of time before Cohen turned on Trump in order to receive a lighter prison sentence.
That talk intensified after it was revealed that Cohen made at least one recording of the President discussing a possible payment to Playboy playmate Karen McDougal in the fall of 2016.
McDougal alleged to have carried on a year-long affair with the President back in 2006, but no payment of “hush” money was ever made by Trump to McDougal.
Trump tweeted that what Cohen did may have been illegal.
In response, an associate of Cohen told Vanity Fair that Cohen is willing to talk to Robert Mueller about the June 2016 meeting between a Russian lawyer promising “dirt” on Hillary Clinton and members of the Trump campaign including Donald Trump, Jr.
Vanity Fair reports:
“It’s not the recording that is valuable,” one person said. “It’s the backstory.” Another person close to Cohen said that he was privy to information that could be valuable to special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russia’s attempt to interfere in the 2016 election. “When Michael says that he wants the truth out there, and that the truth is not the president’s friend, he is not talking about marginal issues. He’s talking about core issues at the heart of the Mueller probe,” this person continued. Three people familiar with the situation believe that Cohen has discussed information about the June 2016 meeting in Trump Tower, during which Don Jr., Kushner, and Paul Manafort met with a Russian lawyer with ties to the Kremlin who promised to provide them with “dirt” on Hillary Clinton.”
What Cohen knows about the meeting is speculation.
The participants – including the Russians – all testified to the Senate that the meeting did not last long and that the true purpose was to lobby the Trump campaign to lift sanctions against Russian adoption.
Everyone testified there was no discussion of collusion or dirt on Hillary Clinton.
So it is unclear what Cohen brings to the table.
