Democrats were blindsided by a devastating defeat that no one could have predicted
Fake news reporters and Democrats all thought the wind was at their backs in the 2020 election cycle.
They thought wrong.
And now Democrats were blindsided by a devastating defeat that no one could have predicted.
Long elections can be the canary in the coal mine for national trends.
Recently, Republicans picked up a Congressional seat in California for the first time in 22 years when Mike Garcia won a special election.
Republicans added to their momentum by picking up control of the Staunton City Council in Virginia.
This may seem like an isolated local election, but local political reporter Chris Graham explained how larger events shaped the political environment in Republicans favor.
Graham noted that the Republican ticket ran united in their opposition to Democrat Governor Ralph Northam’s anti-gun agenda and economy killing lockdown.
“The tailwind for the Rs, dating back to the winter, was the tumult locally over gun-control legislation being advanced in the General Assembly by Democrats, who had run on gun control as a key issue in the 2019 legislative races that gave them control of the House of Delegates for the first time in more than two decades,” Graham began.
Graham also noted that two of three candidates who supported freeing counties from Governor Northam’s tyrannical lockdown order also won.
“The candidate most closely associated with the sanctuary movement in Waynesboro, Jim Wood, came up well short in his challenge to the sitting mayor, Terry Short, though two other candidates backed by Republicans – Bruce Allen and Lana Williams – won seats to give conservatives a working majority on Waynesboro City Council moving forward,” Graham added.
Staunton is no ruby red enclave either.
As Graham pointed out the city voted for Democrats in the last three Presidential elections and two Virginia Gubernatorial election so the flip to Republican control can only be due to the backlash to the extreme anti-gun and lockdown agenda of Democrats.
“Bottom line is that the strategies worked, flipping both from D to R, but the change in Staunton is stunning almost beyond words. A city that voted for Barack Obama, twice, voted for Hillary Clinton, voted for Terry McAuliffe and Ralph Northam, even gave a solid majority to Jennifer Lewis in her 2018 congressional run against Ben Cline, is now controlled by Republicans,” Graham concluded.
